I'm really sad ....

I just destroyed my REP1 :(

Last week for MBI support they needed a picture of the HBP cable disconnected.

The only problem is that i forgot to reconnect that cable ... Today i was starting a fast print  of 3 minutes for a test .. and ....

1- POP sound like little capacitor explosion

2- Smell of electric things burned out

3- Replicator dead ... The fan start but no light and no dispay anymore.

Checking the motherboard i can see only that part in the picture damaged.

can be possible ?

:(

This is a well known issue. Contact MBI. They *should* be sending you
a new board and X-Axis endstop cable. I don't think you did anything
wrong - the boards are known to be a little sensitive to static and blow
their voltage regulators. Unfortunately, community analysis (it's all
in the archives of this list) reveal that NOTHING is salvageable once
that regulator goes. All the 5V components had 24V go through them (it
seems), and are now all suspect.

Take pictures of the wire connectors now to help out when you replace
the board. And/or label all the cables clearly before they are removed
from the board.

That is indeed the 5V regulator -- the part which is known to die violently.

However, NOT having the HBP connected should not have caused such a problem *unless*
a wire somehow magically managed to insert itself into that female Molex KK 156 connector
which was no longer connected AND in doing so it shorted 24V (+HEAT) to the 5V used
by the thermistor or diode. I find that unlikely. These two events are only related
in that they indicate the age of your Rep 1. I.e., disconnecting the HBP didn't cause
the regulator to blow. Rather, your bot is getting along in usage hours and hence the
likelihood of either of these events has increased and now they have coincidently
each hit within a week of each other.

Unfortunatly i cannot exclude that the cable was in contact with the pins on the HBP, in fact i found the hbp cable touching the first 2-3 pins from the right (looking front top).

So, for the first time in one year i opened the motherboard slot, quite dusty here :)

Shame on me .. let's see mbi support now.

How much it cost the motherboard ?

Last I heard, the board was going for somewhere around $500. But MBI
doesn't sell it. You can only get it via a support request.

MBot sells a version of the board, so I've been told. I don't know the
pricing there, or how go it is. The MightyBoard I saw in an MBot
printer looked slighly different, but that was mostly due to the color
they choose (blue), and the circuit boards seemed less thick. But it
WAS working in the MBot and labelled as a MightyBoard Rev E. So there
may be a source there for the boards.

Thank you all for fast reply, suggestion and support, i really appreciate

It is not your fault. Put in a support ticket and ask for a new motherboard. Attach a picture to the ticket.

Sorry to see yet another failure. I am upset that MakerBot has done
nothing but offer replacements of the same failing board with no real
remedy to the owners of this machine.

The only way to force MakerBot's hands is to file a complaint with the
https://www.saferproducts.gov/CPSRMSPublic/Incidents/ReportIncident.aspx
Let's face it, it's one thing for electronics to fail, but when they
blow out sparks in a wooden housing, that's a different problem. Let's
say you just cleaned the bed witth acetone or alcohol when this
happens? Or what if it's on carpet or near a window curtain? Sure,
it's a million to one odds. If they force recalls onn phone chargers
and laptop adapters that emit sparks or smoke, how is this product
different?

We've tried being nice, we've tried to diagnose the problem in the
group. Makerbot has done nothing but deny any problem. They don't
inform users that it might happen and have no prevention methods in
place.
The only way to fix this is get someone else to force MakerBot to make
it right. They chose to sell you a defective and somewhat dangerous
product. If you bought a TV and it did this, you would expect more
than them to send you a board you have to install right?

Yes, I forgot that the female connector they used has the contacts exposed
and is not a fully enclosed connector. As such, it's all too easy to acidentally
short the connections with a piece of conductive debris or, in your case, by
coming in contact with male pins. (It's a connector intended for use
within a fully enclosed enclosure and not intended for use in a normally
open enclosure. Mind you, left dangling in an enclosed space could also
cause the problem you saw.)

Update:
No lawyers needed here, free replacement sent out some hours ago and also with Fedex International Priority, so will arrive here on friday (Germany).

Replacement for :
MightyBoard rev E (MP02729)
Endstop Cable, 1 m (MP2603)

So nothing to complain on their support this time :) +1

You entirely missed the point. Sure, today you got a free replacement
board. The new board has no changes from the board that just blew up.
Makerbot isn't going to keep carrying the boards, when they run out
from people blowing them up, you are dead in the water. When the
voltage regualtor fails, it kills every chip on the board. This isn't
some home repair you can do or even send the board off. So that ~$2k
machine is going to be a paperweight one day and likely soon.

Or, just keep thinking it's OK. It's your machine.
