Z-axis moving way to far - sometimes

I've got a really strange intermittent problem on my Replicator 2.  My z-axis is moving down when it shouldn't.  What's happening is I'll start a print and the build plate will be a little to low, so the filament isn't sticking.  Then the z-axis moves way too far down, like 10x too far.  I had one small print (just a 1/2 inch cube) that was on layer 3 and Simplify 3D display said X-axis was at 0.87mm, but it looked like it was almost a 1/4 inch to low!

This has happened a couple times now and the scenario goes something like this:  Start a print with Simplify 3D, then I'd cancel when I saw this problem.  I'd reprocess and try again.  Same problem.  So then I tried printing using ReplicatorG and everything was fine.  So then I tried again with Simplify 3D and now everything was fine.  In this last try with Simplify 3D, the STL was modified by ReplicatorG since ReplicatorG always saves the STL when you open it.  So I though that maybe there was something funky in the STL that ReplicatorG was fixing.  But that's not it.  In this most recent test, after the Replicator G printed it okay, I took the original STL and tried again with Simplify 3D and it printed fine.  I even tried the Simplify3D factory file that was originally having problems, and now its fine.  So I'm wondering if it's related to the machine being warmed up.  Next time this happens I'll just keep re-trying the print several times to see if it seems to go away after the machine's been running for a bit.

I can't tell if the z-axis is moving when it shouldn't be moving at all.  Doesn't the z-axis move a bit even while it's on the same layer?

Everything on the machine sounds fine, no strange noises.

Anyone else ever have a weird z-axis problem like this?

I'm running on a Mac Mini OSX 10.9.5 .  STLs are generated by Fusion 360.   Replicator 2 has mighty-board Rev G.  Firmware is sailfish v7.6.  ReplicatorG v 40r23, Simplify 3D v2.2.2

Are you printing over usb?
Why have you not updated to Sailfish firmware 7.7?

This Z hold bug is PRESENT in 7.6.

Note, that is not a Sailfish specific bug. ONLY Sailfish fixed it in 7.7.

If you run stock firmware or MakerBot firmware the bug exists and there is no patch other than to update to Sailfish version 7.7.

I am printing over USB.  I found it much more reliable then SD cards.  I had a lot of problems using the SD cards.   I just this minute finished upgrading to Sailfish 7.7.  I didn't know that a newer version of Sailfish was available.  I need to get on these Google groups more often.

Would it make sense that the z-hold bug would show itself when using Simplify 3D, but not ReplicatorG?

Yes, because of different software doing the USB streaming may or may  not tend to invoke the bug.
They are different but since we know the firmware and all firmwares except 7.7 have the bug- it's just the bug being realized.
