Found these guys in a high-bush blueberry at Green Point Dresden, and one of the parents sneaking away trying not to be too obvious (so I know what species it is).

So, for your mid-summer breeding bird amusement… what is the species?  For scale those are unripe blueberries in the foreground.  You can see there is still one unhatched egg in there too.

PS if you saw this on Facebook in the MaineBirds group don’t give it away…

Harrison says for Black-billed Cuckoo:

"Nest: loosely built cup...rounded with many projecting twig ends.... lined with dried grass, leaves, flowering stems".  "Usually low."

"egg: light blue, blueish green..."

"Altricial.   Almost naked, skin black with sparse, coarse white hairs....  There is a complex pattern of white papillae inside the mouth.  Tongue with black edges at tip."

Plus Cuckoos are sneaky as you described.

Still owe you a twelve pack!
