I have searched around and seen some discussion on this, but so far
I've not yet found the answer. Please forgive me if this has been
covered already.

I want to create a template for emails that will be used when I have a
new post in the "new" category, which is category number 27. I have
tried this doing test emails, but not with any actual posts. So far,
I have tried copying the mp-content/xtras/category-xx.php file to my
current mp theme folder, renaming it category-27.php, and within that
file, changing "Category-xx" to "Category-27."

I tested sending an email of a post in the "new" category using both
the current theme "per post" and the "per post 'new.'" No change.

So I modified the content of the category-27.php file so that it
mimics the "single.php" file in my current theme, but I removed the
header (which is one of my goals for this), by deleting the
get_header() function all together. Still no change.

Is this the purpose of the category-xx.php file, or am I completely
misusing this?

And does anyone have any suggestions on how to create a new template
for use with a particular category?

Thanks all!

Conrad

That's excellent work! I am sorry I misunderstood the use of the
category-xx.php file, but I am excited to hear this feature is added
in the next release. I am willing to try the latest RC, if that will
do it.

@Conrad

here attached is the 'near release candidate 3' of the next plugin version

this mailpress version is still for test.

* before starting anything, save your wp folder (all files) and your database
* read the mailpress/readme.txt file.

* deactivate add-ons and mailpress
* backup your mailpress/tmp folder and theme if customized
* delete mailpress folder
* upload new mailpress folder from rar file
* restore tmp folder and theme if necessary

so on this version, newsletters are defined in mailpress/mp-content/advanced/newsletters/

for category newsletters, there is a subfolder called categories.
i coded a capability to override the categories.xml file with a specific category-xx.xml file (i didnot test it due to lack of time).
See category-27.xml attached, cpoy in into mailpress/mp-content/advanced/newsletters/categories

theme mail templates are singlecat-27, dailycat-27, weeklycat-27, monthlycat-27.
About mail templates read : http://www.mailpress.org/wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Theme:Development#Templates

Please report any bug

thanks

Thanks, Andre. I am giving this a shot.

One question - in the category-27.xml file, the templates are defined
as "singlecat-27" without the "php" extension. Should those have a
php extension on them as they are listed in the xml file? or should
the template file be listed simply as singlecat-27 with NO
extension?

Here's what I have done:

activated the nearly-RC3 version of mailpress 5.0 (after duly copying,
backing up, deactivating, deleting, etc.). I re-activated a bunch of
add-ons (really nice interface for that, by the way - I was a bit
confused because of the change from prior versions, but once I
realized what was going on, I really like it!)

I added the category-27.xml file to the newsletters/categories folder.

I created a new singlecat-27.php file in my theme folder. It's an
exact copy of my single.php file.

I have tested using a draft post with a picture and text in it, which
is in the "new" category (id=27). In the Mailpress test box I have
selected the newsletter "per post 'category 27'" template. I get an
email with only a header (the same header that I get in all of my
emails using Mailpress, including the link to "view on our website"),
but there is no text or picture of any content of the post. The
subject of the email is "New post in category 27 : creating flim
flam."

So, clearly, it's not using my template file.

When testing using different newsletter category templates, the
content of the post come through just fine.

I should also point out: I notice that now my "new" category is, in
all things Mailpress, called "category 27." In the newsletter
subscription admin page, it's listed as "category 27" and in the test
email option, there is no option for using the "new" category
template, but instead the templates for "category 27." I am guessing
that is because that is how they are defined in the category-27.xml
file.

Andre -

I had just forgotten to change the "Name of Template" within the
template itself! Tests now seem to be working when selecting the
"category-27" template. I'll have to see how it goes when publishing a
post in that category...

Is the category-27 template used when the post is published in
multiple categories, including category-27?

Thanks -

Conrad

Is the category-27 template used when the post is published in
multiple categories, including category-27?

if you publish a post in 10 categories and allowed the 10 'per post' newsletters, and have a subscriber subscribing to those 10 'per post' newsletters, this subscriber will receive 10 per post newsletter ...

Ah - I see. I just set up a test site and ran this a few times. I
found that when the post is published in ONLY category 27, users who
have subscribed to "blog per post" and the category 27 per post get
two emails - one using the normal single.php template, and one using
the category-27.php template. That follows exactly what you explained
below, but I had to see it to fully understand.

Thanks so much for your help. still working on the desired result, but
I'm getting there!

Thanks -

What you call "normal single.php" is in fact : the newsletter 'new_post' which has in (mail>Template) the value 'single'. 'single' Template is associated to file single.php file in the mailpress theme.

If you want to exclude category 27 from newsletter 'new_post', hereattached a sample file
by adding in processor>query_posts>cat>-27 (minus 27), you exclude category 27 from the query_posts generated by mailpress to get the post(s) to mail.

hope this is clear enough.

A-HA! I see now... Thank you so much! I think I am there. I will test
some more and let you know if there are any issues, but I expect this
will do it!

Thank you!

Well, it seems I have hit a snag. I have added the new lines to my
new_post.xml file (contained in the mp-content/advanced/newsletters/),
but it does not prevent the mailing of posts in category 27. I had
wanted to exclude category 27 from being emailed to those who had
signed up for the overall "blog" per post mailings, but they are still
receiving those emails, along with those who signed up for just
category 27 per post mailings.

On the positive side, those who subscribed to category 27 emails get
them based on the template that I created for category 27
(singlecat-27.php), but those who are getting the "blog" per post
emails get them based on the current theme template for single.php.

Yes - I publish a new post in category 27 only and emails go to each
person who has subscribed to blog per post AND to category 27. those
who have subscribed only to category 27 get only one email.

Any ideas?

Would it matter if I have changed the subject in my template file
(single.php)?

AS A REMINDER

SINCE MAILPRESS 7.0, ALL mp-content/advanced/files and /tmp files have been moved [upon request by the WordPress plugin team] to wp-content/uploads/mailpress

advanced files are in this directory :

wp-content/uploads/mailpress/advanced/ (blog id) / ...

For now, this is done once at first install or deactivation/activation of MailPress
