Hi all,

Starting 7pm Wed Sept 18th I'm thinking about running a 1hr class on wed nights on how to setup and use the knitting machine and ribber. There's a lot to learn so I want to keep the classes down to max 6 people if I can.

There will probably be five classes:

- Setup, basic knit and trouble shooting
- Designing and knitting your own multicolored patterns in fair isle (using on-board computer) and intarsia
- Ribber setup and basic knits
- 1/2 Putting it all together: knit your own a sweater
- 2/2 Putting it all together: knit your own a sweater

So what I want to know is:

- Are you interested?
- Does the time/day work for you?

Cheers,
Sarah

Sounds great, would rather a different day (any) but that's just due to existing commitments (dnd, laser training).

Will tentatively put my hand up for Clare too. :-)

Hrm... I could possibly also maybe consider running duplicate classes on Mondays starting 23rd Sept.

This way if you miss the previous Wed class, you can still attend the next Mon.
Or if you attended the previous Wed class but ran into trouble over the next few days, it'll be repeated the next Mon.

I'm going to have to make the first and third classes (Wed 18th/Mon 23rd and 2nd Oct/7th Oct) mandatory because if someone manages to break the knitting machine or ribber due to not knowing how to look after it, that'll destroy it for everyone.

I'd also like to come to this - looks like there's space on Wednesday?

I've added the classes to the calendar - the Monday classes coincide with the 3D printing/NJA meetups, and Wednesdays with D&D and Mind Hacking, but I don't think any of these evenings are short of space.

Hi there,

What's the latest on the courses, are they all full up? In the meantime, I have found a lovely lady called Gemma Ledden (see her work here): http://www.gemmaledden.co.uk/collections.html who is willing to give lessons for £15 plus travel costs from Hitchin (about £17 a time). I've agreed for her to come on Sunday 8th (this Sunday) for a couple of hours. Let me know if anybody wants to join the lesson and share the cost (£47).

This might be good for people who can't make the proposed dates.

Erica: I'm curious about Gemma's class this sunday, but what will she be teaching exactly? Setup of the machine for absolute beginners or something more advanced? Could she show us how to latch the floats on fair isle or how to do jaquard for example?

Cheers,
Sarah

That's great news! Looking forward to it.

Re: this Sunday

To begin with she's just going to teach the basics as I've got to start from ground zero on the machine. However, i've spoken to her on the phone and she seems to have deep knowledge, so there will be the opportunity to ask how to demonstrate advanced things, and arrange a future session on them (or add it on to the end of this one if there is time once we've done the basics).

I for one am quite an experienced hand knitter and love cabling and lace (I've never done and am not that interested in colour work) so I'll be wanting to know quite soon how to do cables and lace with the machine.

Sarah, feel free to come along to ask any questions you have. She seems quite flexible and said she can stay for extra hours if there is a need, so you can play it by ear on the day and extend to include time to address your specific questions.

Best,

Erica.

P.s. I thought jacquard was another term for fair isle. If not, then I don't know what it is, but if you want to check if she knows I can give you her number off the list.

Ok sweet, I might pop by then. Can you clarify that Gemma will be coming to the hackspace or do we need to travel to Hitchin? I'm a bit confused what the £15/£17 means exactly.

I've tried cables on the knitting machine. It's a bit fiddly for my taste because you have to use the same tension for all knits regardless if it's part of the cable or not, but the results are very satisfying! I've been dying to give this pattern a go: http://katedaviesdesigns.com/designs/o-w-l-s/

From my limited research, jacquard on the machine is used to back knit fair isle with the ribber attachment. So I guess it can be done at the same time as fair isle or fair isle can be done on its own. So you're not wrong, it's a technique for fair isle knitting afaik. There's a lot of interest at the hackspace to hack the knitting machine / print in two colour knit so I'm trying to find a solution with maximum flexibility for designs and best results :)

Hi there,

Gemma is coming to the Hackspace for 1pm on Sunday. I initially asked her to come for two hours to go through the basics and start using the machine. So it will probably replicate the material that Sarah will teach in her first class on the 18th. After we have mastered the basics of casting on, knitting a sample of fabric on the machine and casting off, there is leeway to ask her to show us whatever we fancy. This may take longer and we can play it by ear. On my list of things to ask her is: ribbing, shaping, cables and lace. If we don't get through it all in one session, we could organize more (if they are things that Sarah can't or doesn't have time to cover), but let's discuss that on Sunday.

See you there!

Kind regards,

Erica.

Yep sounds like Gemma will cover the same stuff I'll be covering (basics and start using the machine, ribbing, shaping). I'll be focusing on how to do multicolour tho not cables or lace.

Now we can communicate with the knitting machine via computer I'll probably cover that side of things as well (haven't quite worked out where yet, might need to add another class - stay tuned!).

Just confirming tomorrows machine knitting class starts at 1pm in the Hackspace and we're expecting Zsuzsanna, Joanna and myself. If this is the final number that would cost us each about £20.

Hi Andrew,

I've run training in the past on a purely unpaid / voluntary basis but I've been extremely busy recently and haven't had any time. There are a few members around who know how to use it so if you ask around nicely you might get lucky.

Personally I learnt by reading. There are tutorials on youtube and the instruction books for the machine can be found in the right most plastic crate on the shelves. Please be very careful with the machine and make sure you read the instructions carefully on maintenance as there are a lot of delicate moving parts.

Cheers,
Sarah
