[PLEDGE] plumbing to the basement

Hi All,

I know that PCB etching, photography, and and the darkroom area, and various other activities are held back by the lack of plumbing to the basement.

There is currently £350 out of £800 remaining to kick that off. I know that's quite a bit of money but I think it will really give some bang for those bucks.

The basement plumbing pledge includes such modern conveniences as:

• Sink in the main workshop area with HOT WATER!
• 1 Sink in PCB/darkroom area
• working PCB etching tank
• Working sink in the Biolab

I'll pledge a conditional £50.

It's conditional on the fact of the etch tank remaining where its
orignally planned to be. And it's installation not being blocked by any
random other large things / projects / etc that may or may not be broken
(cough, flow cytometer, cough) or worked on in the future. And goes in
immediately upon completion of the initial plumbing job being done.

We need to buy the pump and pipes, then plan how to do the work.

I was looking for the pump we were discussing (with Paddy D) a few months ago, and found this link, which is cheaper than the £590 I'd put on the pledge. 'Which pump' confirmation would be a good first step.

Do we do anything anticipating future maintenance or failures, like insisting on a valid warranty with a certain length, or saving money for a replacement?

Saniflo only list one version of the Sanivite, so it has to be the same one.

As the previously specified pump is somewhat cheaper than expected, and some people have some doubts about its ability to deal with etchants (myself included), I will have another final browse around in case there does exist the perfect pump at an affordable price.

Interesting. Of course if we went for something like this we would have to consider it disposable, as it is plainly for domestic use, and does not look serviceable.

Personally I would prefer not to do this job more than once, and to go with something recommended for our actual use.

My guess would be that it would probably work fine, but not for long.

That one requires the inlet to be at least 350mm ish above ground, so servicing 3 sinks etc at a distance would be a problem. It looks like the Sanivite may be our best choice.... oh well.

As it basically a container with a self-contained pump inside add a float/level switch higher up in the container to trigger an alarm by the sinks that feed it.

I'll be driving up to the space a couple of times this week, so I can go and collect the unit from a supplier in East London, or out in Essex. which might save a few quid for delivery....

Yes I have decided on a pump. The one that is in that bucket (sump)
arrangement. But, as we will have to make our own holes in the side of the
bucket, we may as well make our own sump. Something a bit bigger will allow
us to add a second float switch to reduce the frequency of the pump and add
an overflow alarm. By all means buy the pump Will, and put it somewhere I'll
trip over it daily.

Typically a pledge is a pledge, and once it's completed successfully it's pretty poor form to pull out.

Even if the outcome of the pledge hasn't been completed in a timely fashion.

However, if you genuinely can't commit to the pledge anymore, that you previously committed to (and a pledge is a commitment by the way), then I'm sure others will step up to cover it.

tl;dr a pledge is a commitment, don't be a dick and pull out after a pledge is successfully completed and funded, but if you can't afford it anymore, just say so and I'm sure others will help out.

flooring and paint the floor first.

The rest of the stuff is easy enough, but this is in the way of everything,
even if the floor were not done.

The cytometer unit is on wheels and the desk and oscilloscope come off, so it can be rolled out while the floor and plumbing is done. I'll use some stretch wrap to cover it.

There is a crow bar on the fridge in the biolab that I brought in for floor stripping duty.

Regarding the floor, in case anyone is tempted to rip it up, please don't, as it will end up requiring more cleaning to prepare for painting.

We'll try to get it done as close to painting time as possible...
