Hi All,

I know that PCB etching, photography, and and the darkroom area, and various other activities are held back by the lack of plumbing to the basement.

There is currently £350 out of £800 remaining to kick that off. I know that's quite a bit of money but I think it will really give some bang for those bucks.

The basement plumbing pledge includes such modern conveniences as:
  • Sink in the main workshop area with HOT WATER!
  • 1 Sink in PCB/darkroom area
  • working PCB etching tank
  • Working sink in the Biolab

The Basement plumbing pledge page is here;

I think it's well worth making a pledge for this one, just because it will open up a lot more options.

Thanks,
Tom

I didn't know that people had been pledging for this.

I'm in for £25.

The workshop needs a sink. Hot water's a bonus.

Are we going to do this ourselves or are we hiring in a plumber?

I'll pledge a conditional £50.

It's conditional on the fact of the etch tank remaining where its
orignally planned to be. And it's installation not being blocked by any
random other large things / projects / etc that may or may not be broken
(cough, flow cytometer, cough) or worked on in the future. And goes in
immediately upon completion of the initial plumbing job being done.

Pledged for no real reason other than maybe one day the plumbing in the basement might be useful to us brewers.

The metalwork area doesn't have extraction at the moment does it?

Another £25 for now from me... if by payday we're still on this and another push is needed, will raise my pledge a bit more.

Sounds good to me -- I'll donate £50 now if someone can send me the bank details off-list (non-member).

You can find it on github[1] in donate.php, or just sign up and it'll be the only member page you can see.

I've pledged to help with PCB etching. Should we pay the money to the Hack Space now, when the pledged total reaches the target, or some other event?

Well, no need to send it now - it's a pledge, so it's only needs sending once we reach the target. We also need to decide on a pledge reference to help sort out the donations (probably PLUMBING).

Ah, sorry, I've jumped the gun -- my bank allowed an 18 character reference so I went with "basement plumbing".

Incidentally, I'd much rather pay up-front to avoid what might become a hassle. If the pledge comes to nothing (extremely unlikely, I suspect) then it's fine to treat it as a general donation.

Ok seems we have enough money, hooray!

We need to buy the pump and pipes, then plan how to do the work.

I was looking for the pump we were discussing (with Paddy D) a few months ago, and found this link, which is cheaper than the £590 I'd put on the pledge. 'Which pump' confirmation would be a good first step.

Yes interesting…. I’ll go back through my notes in a bit, that £590 must have come from somewhere. This was definitely the pump I selected at some stage.

You can get it even cheaper here:
http://www.plumbnation.co.uk/site/sanivite-macerator-small-bore-pumping-system/?gclid=COSbwIC--LkCFRPItAod2CYA9w

It looks like a good choice, can't think of a good reason to buy a better one.

What's the hack space experience with buying things similar to this in the past - do we see any value in buying a product marketed/warrantied as 'commercial' rather than 'domestic'? Do we do anything anticipating future maintenance or failures, like insisting on a valid warranty with a certain length, or saving money for a replacement?

I'm new to the hack space and I'm sure y'all have more experience with this sort of thing than I do :)

Saniflo only list one version of the Sanivite, so it has to be the same one.

Except the price, of course. And that 300 includes free delivery, whereas the 590 doesn't - it is another 18!

They seem to be the same model as far as I can tell (this is the range of Saniflo products - http://www.plumbcenter.co.uk/wcsstore7.00.00.656/ExtendedSitesCatalogAssetStore/images/products/AssetPush/DTP_AssetPushHighRes/std.lang.all/ic/al/Saniflo_DomesticRange_Technical.pdf Sanivite / 1004 seems to just be a specific model).

However, it looks like similar systems with the same specifications can be found for even cheaper - this one on Amazon appears to be the same spec as the Sanivite, and is <£100: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquamarin%C2%AE-Macerator-Waste-Pump/dp/B00972O030/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1380900735&sr=8-5&keywords=saniflo

Is there any particular reason we're going for the Sanivite specifically?

Biohackers have paid. Total paid is now £575. Is anyone up for taking responsibility for making the final choice about and and purchasing the pump?

Paddy Duncan

I guess I will be…

As the previously specified pump is somewhat cheaper than expected, and some people have some doubts about its ability to deal with etchants (myself included), I will have another final browse around in case there does exist the perfect pump at an affordable price.

Out of interest, was there a reason the one on Amazon wouldn't be suitable? The link again in case you missed it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquamarin%C2%AE-Macerator-Waste-Pump/dp/B00972O030/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1380900735&sr=8-5&keywords=saniflo

Sorry I didn't see this...

Interesting. Of course if we went for something like this we would have to consider it disposable, as it is plainly for domestic use, and does not look serviceable.

Personally I would prefer not to do this job more than once, and to go with something recommended for our actual use.

My guess would be that it would probably work fine, but not for long.

OK.

That one requires the inlet to be at least 350mm ish above ground, so servicing 3 sinks etc at a distance would be a problem. It looks like the Sanivite may be our best choice.... oh well.

Aren't the sinks fairly close together? If the sump were midway between them, 350mm doesn't sound so high. We could probably modify the etch tank to exit a bit higher.

I'll measure today and work out the angles.... looking at the pump, it should be able to work with 200mm ish if the float valve can be slightly restained.

As it basically a container with a self-contained pump inside add a float/level switch higher up in the container to trigger an alarm by the sinks that feed it.

It doesn't actually matter where the inlet is as long as the pipes are well sealed to above the float switch position. So you could add another inlet at the lowest point.

Good timing Will,
Yes I have decided on a pump. The one that is in that bucket (sump)
arrangement. But, as we will have to make our own holes in the side of the
bucket, we may as well make our own sump. Something a bit bigger will allow
us to add a second float switch to reduce the frequency of the pump and add
an overflow alarm. By all means buy the pump Will, and put it somewhere I'll
trip over it daily.
http://www.drainage-systems-online.co.uk/acatalog/Dirty_Water_Sump_Pumps.htm
l#.UntVXeI8omE
Not had a lot of luck finding a suitable sump though. Tough rubberyish
plastic, 500mm deep, 400x600 ish...
Please let me know if anyone knows of anything suitable, or we could
consider building something in place.
Cheers

So that is the Zoeller WU70 Grey Water Sump Pump (7.6m lift)  Price:£146.09 (Excluding VAT at 20%)

They also sell the kit, which includes the same pump, the WU70, along with a bucket and 3 year warranty for 295 (Basement Drainage System (90ltr capacity) 600 Series  Price:£295.20 (Excluding VAT at 20%))

They come in all sizes (radiator heading tanks usually smaller than hot water headers).

For instance, this one is probably too small :

No matter at all, things are proceeding anyway.
We've already bought a sump tank, and most of the pipes and fittings.
The required pump is this (with float switch):
http://www.drainage-systems-online.co.uk/acatalog/Cellar_Drainage_Pumps.html
#.UqTPZOJuT6Q
We should get it asap to work out the connections.
I need to get a handful of other bits and bobs but:
It would be really helpful if we could clear the area, remove the old
flooring, and paint the floor first.

With recent talk of increasing the minimum membership I am cancelling my
pledge.
I will instead keep the money in a tin as a reserve to cover the extra
if minimum membership is ever increased.

Typically a pledge is a pledge, and once it's completed successfully it's pretty poor form to pull out.
Even if the outcome of the pledge hasn't been completed in a timely fashion.

However, if you genuinely can't commit to the pledge anymore, that you previously committed to (and a pledge is a commitment by the way), then I'm sure others will step up to cover it.

tl;dr a pledge is a commitment, don't be a dick and pull out after a pledge is successfully completed and funded, but if you can't afford it anymore, just say so and I'm sure others will help out.

Wow, OK.  I was just saying it's poor form to pull out after a pledge is successful, didn't think that was patronising at all.
I even included a caveat that if you genuinely can't afford it, it's fine and people will accept that.

This is unacceptable. Please do not respond to the mailing list in this
way.

Richard was perfectly reasonable pointing out that while it is generally
considered poor form it is ok to pull out of a pledge if you can no
longer afford it. Your response was not appropriate.

I guess I misunderstood the point of your post.
Sorry. Bad day, off guard, etc.

Pledge now paid, because I feel like a shit. reference ALLTHEPIPES

Thanks (and sorry for delay again). Which one of the pumps on that page?

What's the planned location for it?

The top one, and the location is in the corner under the soil pipe, beside
the biolab wall.
Inside the darkroom, should it happen :)

The pump, and a matching non-return valve shall be on the way shortly.
To reiterate my previous message, we should really remove the crappy
flooring and paint the floor first.
The holiday quiet period would be ideal, especially the 25th/26th, so what
are the chances of shifting the cytometer within the next week?
The rest of the stuff is easy enough, but this is in the way of everything,
even if the floor were not done.

The cytometer unit is on wheels and the desk and oscilloscope come off, so it can be rolled out while the floor and plumbing is done. I'll use some stretch wrap to cover it.

There is a crow bar on the fridge in the biolab that I brought in for floor stripping duty.

The cytometer is stretch wrapped with cling film, and I've moved it out next to the kilns. Hopefully that's just a temporary stop, and not in anyone's way.

Cheers,
Tom

Cool thanks for that Tom.

Regarding the floor, in case anyone is tempted to rip it up, please don't, as it will end up requiring more cleaning to prepare for painting.

We'll try to get it done as close to painting time as possible...

Ah crap I also ordered it yesterday - ill call and cancel - did you order from the same place?

Russ was ordering it, just waiting to hear on irc if it actually happened...

And yes so if you are calling you could check.

If he hasn't, could you add non-return valve 02290 to the order, and check that the auto (with float valve) version has been orderd?

Cheers

I saw a package for you yesterday but I'm fairly sure it was too small
to be a pump.

There is a medium size box addressed to you (Will) from "Basement and

Went in today but couldn't see the package. Feel free to open if not
done already. Should be pump + valve. Let me know if only one arrived
as I still need to email them and get a receipt.

I put it in the boiler room (paddy asked me to).
