Hello All,

I am really interested in starting a small committed group to meet at the London Hackspace weekly or monthly specifically to discuss, build and show off hand/machine made acoustic instruments. These don't necessarily have to comply with the traditional understanding of a 'musical' or a 'tonal' instrument, i.e. we could build noise instruments acoustically, just like Luigi Russolo's Art of Noises sort of thing or more recently, work like Dan Wilson's Miraculous Agitations. Likewise, this group may also focus on instruments that are cheaply made from recycles parts, objects lying about in the house, etc...

If this goes well, and there is enough interest, we can start inviting more known instrument builders to come and show us the way. This could be quite fun! If you are really interested in this, please make this known by replying to this.

Best Wishes,
Saif

Hey I'd love to do a monthly class! I have been looking into starting to make instruments by myself but this sounds like a great idea!

Ok great stuff. Sorry for the late reply, Its been a really busy week. So far, there are three people interested [including you], which is a great start. It would be great to know what you guys do, are you just interested in this, or you are a hobbyist of this sort of stuff, etc... I don't know if I should start like a conversation/discussion somewhere else than here, but problem I don't know where to do that. The whole point of that I am thinking It would be nice to have a balanced group in terms of skills and variety. For example, It may be ideal to have someone who is great at crafting wood, and another who is good with metal, etc... So if we are missing such a person, we can find one.

I am for example a hobbyist maker, who is yet to finish making an instrument. I have few detailed designs/ideas and sketches in my book, that I would love to make, some of which are half way through in the making process. I am primarily a student/musician studying 'sound' ,etc... I will leave my email below. I will set a date as soon as I can for an initial meeting, for which I will prepare some material we can go through.

I am a trumpet and cornetto player interested in making renaissance woodwind and brass. I have experience turning wood and have done a lot of research into designs of instruments.

I'm interested, but have little time to make it to the hackspace.
I've been building a spinet for the last few years, much of it on courses at West Dean College. Apart from the skills and knowledge I've picked up on that kind of instrument, I've also had the opportunity to work alongside others building a range of other instruments.
I'm also interested in developing some electroacoustic instruments inspired by the stuff from folktek, though it's not a priority.
I've also built various bits and pieces for electronic music, and am seeing how far I can go with the diy project at madronalabs.com

So, I'm happy to contribute though probably in a more virtual sense.

I'm an improvising musician and am interested in building new instruments that open up new possibilities for my own performances. The more open and further away from traditional instrument technique the better.

My instrument making skills currently consist of hammering nails into planks of wood, but I'm hoping to expand ;) One of the ideas I'm interested in is making playable, versatile and interesting instruments for under £5 (eg diddley bows, which I'm currently more than a little obsessed with).

How about we organise a date to meet and go from there? Personally I'd rather do once a month as I'm unlikely to be able to make once a week .

Cheers,

Tim

Ok awsome, we now have 3 people interested here, and 2 others from this music hackspace thread. Very healthy number, and a nice variety and It looks like all of you are quite vocal, which is great. We can maybe collectively build out of this world instruments from like what's lying around the hackspace tim. I am really looking forward to it.

How about we meet on Tuesday 10th Dec 7pm

If the date/time doesn't suit you, suggest another! Saif

I am thinking to expand this group's vision by changing just acoustic to electro acoustic. It's still mainly sound produced acoustically but obviously that can be integrated with electronics to either amplify, provide power supply, trigger, etc...  but not to go as far as all digital sound. And guys from this music hackspace thread have agreed on Tuesday 10th Dec 7 pm as an ideal time. So would be good to hear if It's good time for you or not. Saif

I usually work on a Tuesday evening so they're more or less off limits for me I'm afraid. I could do Wednesday of Thursday that week though.

Electro is fine by me!

BTW, have you checked out the Playwood group? Meeting every Wednesday to make stuff out of wood. I went this week - lots of fun and a pretty big crossover with building instruments ...

Have you tried setting up a doodle for pickign the first date? May be quicker than trying to negotiate across two different mailing lists. (Unless you've already decided.)

I can make 12th December, but cannot commit to other dates at the moment: it's a pretty hectic time of year for me. I've updated the Doodle. I assume that the meet is scheduled for 7pm, but would be delighted if it could be earlier: 6 or 6:30 start would reduce the amount of time I'd have to hang around after work.

If people are interested, I could bring the following as talking points:
  • Workshop drawings of the spinet I'm working on, and maybe some pictures;
  • Ronald Roberts book: Musical Instruments - Made to be played (it has plans for simple instruments)
  • Richard Orton book: Electronic Music for Schools (the chapter by Hugh Davies has some interesting ideas)

Regards, Chris.

For some reason, I thought we were meeting tomorrow evening. Clearly a senior moment.

I've removed myself from the doodle because I have a prior engagement that evening (carols at Lewisham Hospital) which will probably finish earlyish, but will  make for a very compressed evening. Realistically, December is booked to the hilt for me, and something in the new year would start to be doable for me.

I think you all know. But Thursday 19th Dec will be the designated date for our first meeting. This will be the start of new chapter in your lives, as this group embarks on this new journey of discovery of inner secrets of matter as we know it. Please bring yourselves among other interesting ideas you have in your head, and maybe bring something you've built and also some beer or something equivelant.

Hello Everyone!

Many thanks for everyone who came to the last meeting on Thursday. It was small, cosy and full of ideas. The main idea is to get down to the nitty gritty of making an instrument in the next meeting. So in order to contain all your awesome design ideas, we are trying to come up with a modular solution, where the main resonant 'body' of the instrument is made to accomodate different modules by some sort of special body contact design. This way, we can end up with one epic instrument of significant size and variety of amazing timbral qualities.

It is important at this point to show your commitment to this or lack of by sending me your email, so I can invite you to a shared folder, where the designs will be shared, among with other goodies. It is likely our next meeting is in Jan. I will be uploading dimensions of the wood panels I have, and the design sometime soon. I believe Tim at some point will create a doodle to check your availability.

I'll be back, but for now, I wish you all a great Christmas. Saif

Anyone interested in hacking (or reviving) a violin? It's been sitting in my loft for exactly that purpose for the best part of twenty years. It's a very entry level Chinese student model probably 3/4 size. No strings, so the tailpiece is loose, but, amazingly, the soundpost is still in place. Bridge is gone (they are only ever wedged in place, anyway) and the area where the bridge should sit is a bit chewed up on one side. Tuning pegs are all there. There's a manky old case which provides minimal protection.

Not sure how it plays to the modular ideas, but it provides a nice wooden resonant cavity made of a half decent tonewood, and tuning pegs and holes (which would be hard to make well), plus a finger board.

Happy New Year to all.

Sun 23rd Acoustic Meeting Outcome

Thanks for everyone who showed up to the meeting on sunday (tim!), It was truly an epiphany. This is what we did.

Presenting the first ever creation of this group, the hackspace diddly boo, a 2 string instrument with the added bonus of few kalimba/mbira tones on the side. It is a multi-timbrel instrument, truly advanced!

Presenting The Hackspace Chimes, uncanny to those tones produced by massive church bells, created by what resembles aluminium table legs! These inspired us through the evening with their ever so soothing tones, and unpredictable harmonics. Briefly, the hack-space was truly heavenly.

And this is what I envision for this group, few hours of making something which otherwise you'd have had to spent 10s of quids to get. At the same, learning through making, instead of faffing about trying to design something incredibly complex. Anyways next meeting, we may be up to the following:

- Make your own mallets (those used to hit musical things with, i.e. vibraphones)
- Continue Chimes, possibly build frame.
- Weld together a Mbira like instrument.
- Play around with motors as way of hitting the chimes and other stuff (yes, we're getting more advanced).
- Make a general use violin bow.

If you want an invite to the folder which contains some really useful lists, please email me. As for now, I'll be posting the doodle as soon as I can for next meeting.
So Join us next time.

Best Wishes,
Saif

This is the latest doodle for acoustic meeting, sorry about the choice of days, I can add more if needed, please place your availability. Just to re-iterate, this is a workshop, i.e. you come in and you get your hands dirty!

For the workshop this time, we may be doing the following, but It kinda depends on the day and our state of mind:

- making mallets
- messing around with using motors/pc fans and using it to hit things! - An artist called Zimoun does such a thing on a humongous scale.
- working with metal [possibly]
- we can also mess around with resonators! and some other stuff from Nicholas Collins' Book

There are documents which I've shared with some include useful household items which may be of great help in doing this workshop. If you send me your email, I can invite you to them. The more stuff we have to mess around with, the better!

Thanks a lot Mark but note this doesn't happen every week, and it's a different date every month! Thanks, I'll post latest update soon! Saif

I've made a set of what were initially going to be tubular bells, but I didn't have enough pipe so they're more like wind chimes.
But I have an octave of B5 to B6 (approximately in tune). Here is a video of the bells/chimes/glockenspiel thing:

Update: Sunday 23rd meeting

Special thanks to all who attended the meeting/workshop. It was great seeing many new faces, excited to feel such enthusiasm towards this new era of acoustic revolution. Apologies for no exciting media to show this time, as it was mostly an introductory meeting with few demonstrations. It was obvious many were interested in different things, but majority leaned towards a more 'electro' acoustic approach. We messed about with Motors controlled by arduino (Lucia), Piezo Drivers (i.e. resonators/Nicholas Collins), while Phil passionately expressed his love for such wonderful robotic creatures that play drums and percussion. Others were clearly looking to engage in the art of traditional classic guitar making, which is beautiful indeed.

Please stay tuned here for latest updates on next meeting, which will probably be next month. I'll make a doodle as soon as I can so you can place your availabilities. Again huge thanks for everyone, and will see you soon. If anyone is interested, I have some shared documents if people want to join, just send me your email, they are helpful for the acoustic stuff. Feel free to make this thread an interesting place for discussion, it doesn't have to be just me saying stuff!

Thanks,
Saif

For the workshop this time, we may be experimenting with the following, but It kinda depends on the day:

- continue working with motors, fans, piezos and resonators.
- make simple plate/spring reverb?
- Make general purpose frame for freely hanging things i.e. can be hit freely.
- Make general purpose resonating chamber.

+ much more! there is a lot to do, and too little time. Please place your availability here. ideas/suggestions and questions, please see official thread on mailing list. Please place your availability via Doodle link below.

Thank You!

Hi Saif,
You may want to mention the name of the workshop (in the subject line atleast) ;) I'm assuming this is for the "acoustic instrument building"?
Cheers

Hi Saif,

I've added this to the calendar. You should be aware that it overlaps slightly with the modular synth workshop (which I understand is small), so you may need to work around them for a bit.

As this seems to be a regular thing, I wonder if you'd like to look after the calendar entries yourself? All I do is copy the previous event, and update the "More details" link to point to the latest announcement. I've given you permission - let me know if you get stuck.

thanks alot mark, just added some more details to it, neat.

QUICK Acoustical UPDATE: Kevin who is working with a custom-made singing bowl to make some sort of electro acoustic sculpture would be showing us what's he's actually doing this Sunday, etc... Definitely worth seeing.

Really? I don’t mind the posts here. Others provide regular updates of their activities on the main list too.

I really don’t see how these messages qualify as “spam”.

The thread topic was to gauge interest in a group, and is now being used to organise meetings every week and communicate with members of his group. Once a group is established they should set up their own list for that kind of thing. Giving meaningful updates in a new thread every so often is fine.

(I personally like to see posts on this list about events happening at the Hackspace, but I can understand why some others might not see them necessary).

The fact that it's one thread currently means you can just hit ignore.

Yep, I realise this thread is getting big, and a little messy. I've been thinking about this, this group will be getting its own website/list etc...I can't help I am too keen to make this thing work, that's why I try to be consistent in my routine messages. Looking at dates of previous messages, to be honest, they look like at least one month apart unless someone replies. I don't post if it's gibberish, all posts are purely for organisational purposes. This will eventually be migrated externally and promoted across wider channels, I just need some time. Thanks, Saif

Huge thanks for everyone who attended Sun 27th April, It was a very unique meeting. We had guest ‘Kevin’ who is working with a hand-made singing bowl, which when struck properly, can achieve up to 4 minutes of continuous resonance.

In line with his project, there was a sparking interest around various coil designs, such as the ones used as transducers i.e. in speakers. Below you can see what’s called a Tesla Coil (which I wound myself) being used to resonate the bowl, physically changing its shape as a result.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Rchrshx1YAs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Along with this, as you can see below, we continued from previous meeting messing with motors. Below you can Arduino to PWM control motor to produce tones, and also an amplifier driving a gentle sine wave into a motor. Steel blades sound amazing!

Announcements

We now have our little temporary blog, which will probably at some point turn to a proper website. Everything from updates, announcements, information about future meetings as well as contact info, etc… will be posted here as well as the blog. Name of the blog is also still undecided, if you’ve got an idea, send it through.

Another thing, Acoustic Hacking will be permanently on the last Sunday of each month at 7pm at LHS. This means next meeting will be:

Sun 25th May 7pm

If this is not the greatest time for you or have other ideas, please do contact me or Tim. Agenda for next meeting will be up soon. Again, huge thanks for Kevin and everyone who attended this time.

Join us in next meeting,

That's great! Do you have access to the calendar? Otherwise I can add it (as a recurring event.)

Hello Martin,

I am confused a little. The /events page of the London Hackspace website has changed a little, and I can't seem to know where I am able to add an event to the calendar. If it's possible you can add the following as a recurring event for every last sunday of the month, or at least just for next one really.

Piezos, motors, microphones, wood, steel, aluminium, rubber balls, bows, bowls, strings, springs, popsicle sticks, dental floss, horse hair, bicycle wheels, forks and spoons, nails, balloons and tuning pegs. Join us for acoustic hacking workshops happening every last sunday of the month. Visit acousticlondon.tumblr.com for latest updates or find us on the mailing list.

would highly appreciate it, doesn't matter if it's not re occuring. Thanks alot, Saif.

Done, and recurring. It’ll take a while until it shows up on the new events page, but it’s already in the Google Calendar feed.

(Just send me a direct email if you ever need to make changes.)

OK, keep in mind, there is going to be a synth module workshop same day, we'll probably have to come up with some sort of room arrangement, but should be fine.

"Are you interested in acoustic instrument building?"

I've been asked this question so many times it's lost all sense and meaning. You have a blog now and should have established a group of followers. Can you please update them through your own channels rather than constantly broadcast to thousands of people who've shown no interest? Subgroups have their own mailing lists for a reason.

I have to agree with Sarah, using your own mailgroup with occasional "hey, we did this" email to the main list would be better than constantly resurrecting an irrelevant thread that's going out to 2k+ people. It takes a few seconds to setup the google group (link). Then just add yourselves to the wiki subgroup page.
