Do you want to buy my time?

So, y'all may have noticed that a lot of work around here is waiting
on me specifically, and y'all may also have noticed, via my
plentiful rants on the subject, that I've *tried* to get other
people to take this stuff on and it hasn't really worked.

So, here's another option: what if y'all paid for some of my time?

It turns out that my work will let me do 32 hours a week and still
get benefits. It also turns out that my before-tax income is about
$550 per work day (I would prefer not to take a pay cut).

So I find myself wondering: if people in the community pledged
monthly money for this purpose, could Lojban afford to have me doing
a day or two each month of nothing but Lojban-related work?

Would people even want to do that?

Is my arrogance astounding or *what*? :D

Comments to the main list, please.

-Robin

Personally, I don't see how it'd be a bad idea. We'd need to set up some kind of service for the paying, and an equivalence, i.e. $X = Y hrs.

I won't be contributing any time soon, because my income is entirely college fundingi right now, so I don't have any to spare until my next tuition check in August, but I'm willing, especially if I'm not the only one.

There is nothing wrong with this idea. You'd like to do more; everyone
else would like that too. Why not give you help in the actual form
that we can give it?

I myself am trying to get through the last 1/4 of a pledge drive to
buy a laser cutter, or I'd jump in with cash right now. I will
definitely contribute in some future month.

If at all possible I would love to jump on board as an assistant. I'm trying to get donation boxes set up on the various media outlets, setting up an official merchandise store, and I plan on panhandling the community once that's all set up. If people don't want to donate directly there can be merch options as well.

Count me in, though I can't donate much. However a lot of "not much"es can easily turn into "much" - if enough people on this list chipped in just a few dollars a month just think what it could achieve :-) Please, everyone, have a think about how much you can spare, no matter if it's just a little.

Thanks,

I would love to participate, especially donating to Robin, who does so much for us, but my money goes to what I consider to be higher priorities.

Set up a PayPal account for the LLG. Every time it hits $550, cut robin a check and he can take a day off to do lojban work. I'd put up a recurring $5-10/ month (maybe this could be tax deductible donations?). Maybe it would have to get to $600 to cover overhead.

Each individual contributor can't put forward priorities, nothing would ever get done. Let robin use his judgment, which seems to be accurate and in ample supply.

I fully agree.

Let's let Robin to set priorities.

I don't know who would be in charge of setting the paypal account, but once created, I will commit a fixed monthly amount.

We already have a donation box set up through Google.
I'm not sure where it can be found elsewhere, but it's sitting there plain as day on http://youtube.com/user/logicallanguagegroup/ for your donational-ease.

There's some question about whether this money should go through the
LLG, for legal/tax reasons. Since the response has been mostly
positive, I'll send a clear email with next steps once I know what
they are.

As lindar has suggested, We already have a google checkout account. We can easily use it to set up a donation list. The google donation box is also accessible from http://www.lojban.org/tiki/Donations

Ok, it is there and working.

I did a donation and it worked. So, let's start supporting this initiative! (unless we all/Robin prefer another separate channel for legal/taxes reasons).

Cheers

How many hours approximately will it take to finish the current LaTex
project that everyone is waiting for? It seems like nothing can really
happen until it's done. If an hour estimate could be made, then it would
also be possible to find out how much money it would take to pay for
this amount of work hours. I think it would be useful to know.

I think paying people for doing things that nobody else would do is
legitimate. Probably none of us is rich, but that's why we're a
community, it adds up.

If the choice is between waiting another 10 years for the next official
version of Lojban and paying some money to get it done much faster, the
decision is easy for me.

So, Robin, could you give us some numbers?

This is no longer on the table. In the meantime, the place I was
moonlighting for has taken over the time slot in question.
