Why is singularity so hard to express in lojban?

Plurality is just as hard to express. Lojban lacks grammatical number,
and specifying singular/plural either way requires extra effort, but
saves effort when it's not relevant whether a noun is singular or
plural, because then you don't have to do anything extra; the noun is
already vague about it.

Which way(s) of expressing singularity have you found so far?
