I must vote no.

This vote is for many of the same reasons I gave on the motion for a Mark Wicks donation.  Unlike the Wicks situation, though, the LNC's donation would be the vast majority of the total campaign funding.  We can't put in enough money to make a difference here, so what's the point?  I see no reason to think that the results here will be substantially different than those from the Wicks campaign.

I regretfully vote No on this motion.

Despite the great respect I have for Joe Buchman, I must stay consistent
with my stance on the Wick's motion that until the LNC has a budget and
firm parameters for providing financial assistance to candidates other than
POTUS,  I will vote no on any such motion.

Sam I completely understand your position, and I certainly hope we come up with criteria.  But I understand you to mean that you are not opposed - as Bill is- to assisting downticket campaigns, it is more that there are not established criteria.  I get that and empathize greatly.  I just ask you to consider that we are punishing a candidate for our inaction.  If it isn't the concept - but the criteria - I would ask that you apply your own and if you could support Joe under a committee system that you support him here.

Alicia, I apologize but I missed your post voting no.  I was able to speak with Dr. Buchman.  He asked me to relay some information.  LNC funding would not be the "vast majority," Several significant donations showed up after the debate.  He would be working for matching fund on the radio on July 29th as mentioned during the debate.  He also will be appearing on coast to coast (600 stations) from which surely there will be donations.

Has any other LNC member watched the debate?  In addition to dollars Dr. Buchman asked for constructive feedback and also asked for LNC members to comment with the polling company on their website.

Dr. Buchman appreciates our desire to create a budget and process.  In the month he has been running he has gotten into a debate with four other candidates, been interviewed by KSL, been in four newspapers, been on the television stations  (brief clips from the debate) and is scheduled for C2CAM in two weeks as well as a candidate forum in Moab on August 25.  He also will be at Freedom Fest next week with an audience of likely wealthy donors.

So it does not appear that the "vast majority" of his funding will be from any contribution by this body.  Dr. Buchman is a lifetime member who has given us more than that value in media exposure already.

We have a candidate who has asked us for support both monetarily and with feedback.  Let's please support our candidate.

Moving away from what Dr. Buchman said, as you all know, I hit the telephones and the pavement to retain and attract members.  I speak with regional chairs to encourage them to increase their national memberships --- but this body needs to be aware that it doesn't seem like a great investment to the states that already have ballot access.  Those dollars could be kept in their state.  I know some members vehemently disagree with that point of view.  But it is there.

Hi all,

The last time this came up, I was under the impression that we would soon have a clear and transparent system in place to make these determination. Having to make one ad hoc decision under time pressure makes sense. Having to do a second ad hoc decision months later does not. At this time, I regretfully vote "no", despite my personal belief in this campaign and respect for Candidate Buchman. We need clear, logical, and transparent system here.

Respectfully,

Arvin Vohra

I hope I am proved wrong but it looks like we have a vicious circle – Continuing ‘No’ votes on candidate support motions until we develop guidelines and no appointees or volunteers so far to develop guidelines.

Am I missing something here?

I am sure there are more qualified LNC and LP members but I will volunteer to be part of an effort to develop candidate support guidelines. We will need a strong leader to meet this challenge. Is this a matter of Nick either appointing a committee leader and supporting committee members or soliciting volunteers? I suggest that both LNC and non-LNC members be part of this initiative. Any other volunteers? Might be a good opportunity for new or aspiring LNC members.

Thoughts?

TL; DR - I vote nay on email ballot 2017-16.

My thoughts: I find myself in the same situation as I did when the Wicks motion was presented. At that time, promises to come up with a procedure we made (and we even delayed considering a request from Senator Ebke for that procedure to be in place), yet action has yet to materialize. I believe that our first duty is to win elections, and without a process to vet funding requests, we are ill-equipped to determine which campaigns should receive our limited funds.

As both Arvin and Sam have outlined my concerns, I don't feel the need to reiterate them.

I appreciate Dr. Buchman's many years of service to the Party and as an activist, and I think very highly of him. I also enjoyed seeing his debate performance online, and I think he did a tremendous job of offering a different perspective in that debate.

Unfortunately, I believe that we will never create a process for these type of requests if we continue to fulfill them in the ad hoc manner from our limited funds. As such, I must cast a nay vote. I will continue to do so for all candidate funding requests until we've established a process to vet such requests.

Yes, I'm working on a motion to create a Candidate Support Committee to be tasked with first
developing a set of guidelines (subject to LNC approval) for LNC contributions to individual
candidates other than POTUS.  Once the guidelines are approved the committee will submit
a proposed budget as a new line item for the 2018 LNC Budget then will administer the distribution
of funds.  The Committee might also be tasked with supporting  the new Candidate Support Specialist
position, if we so choose.

Any ideas about motion formulation will be appreciated.

Sam,

I suggest that the motion include a committee selection method (appointed and/or volunteer). Since this will obviously be an important committee of interest to us all, I suggest that the motion specify a minimum of three LNC members and two non-LNC members [substitute your own numbers].

I vote YES! on donating $5000 to Joe Buchman. We are a national political party. I took the time to watch the debate in Provo and I realized we do have smart, normal, libertarian candidates that kick ass when standing on a stage with mere mortals. If for no other reason, let's show him the love he deserves so he will step from behind the lines and continue as a warrior in the limelight now and in the future. I was too hasty in casting my vote before watching Buchman's debate and talking to him about his campaign.

I will point out that since Dr. Buchman is in a federal race, the LNC may solicit funds for his race. I have no problem with staff sending an e-mail informing members about his campaign and directing how to donate to his campaign.

Thank you Tim.

I ask others to reconsider their no vote. Dr Buchman is running a real campaign and passed a significant debating hurdle.

And we can use our assistance for the two (if this passed) special elections as a fundraising point.

Member comments are not always right but the general mood in my sphere of contact is that we don't do nearly enough to assist candidates - that's not just funds but other things we have talked about.

This is a minimal good faith shows no of our commitment.

Ballot access is a tool for one of our primary function NOT a primary function in and of itself.  What are we spending all those monies for?  So that we can run candidates.  We sometimes cringe and bemoan paper candidate syndrome.  Well here's one that's alive and kicking.

Please reconsider.

I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Dr. Buchman at Freedom Fest about his campaign and this vote. Please allow me to share some information from that conversation and some thoughts on this issue generally.

Dr. Buchman has raised significantly more money at this point than before, so a $5,000 contribution from the LNC would approximately double his current fundraising. With the time left to the special election, Dr. Buchman is in a better position to make effective use of our support than Mr. Wicks was mere days before the election.

Special elections are our only Federal campaign activity in an odd-numbered year. They receive an outsized amount of media attention, so support of those candidates lets our party's voice be heard where the media is focused and spreads our message nationally. To my mind, that makes the decision of whether to support a candidate for a special election different from supporting one of hundreds of candidates in a normal election year.

I'm writing this on a plane to Washington to be deposed in a lawsuit we've filed against the FEC to strike down limits on our ability to raise and expend funds on political activity. One of our contentions is that money spent on direct candidate support and campaigning is more valuable to our party than money spent on a building or a national convention.

It is in that spirit that I vote "yes" and urge other members to reconsider and change their vote to yes on this mail ballot.

Yours in liberty,
Nick

P.S. Even if you don't vote "yes," please take the time to watch Dr. Buchman's debate performance and send him some feedback about how he did and how he could do better.

All,

I am switching my vote to "Yes" on the vote for funds for Joe Buchman's campaign.

My vote against it was really because I feel the LNC needs to raise a lot more money before we fund more candidates campaigns.  In light of the chair and staff raising over $36,000 this week at Freedom Fest, I am switching my vote.

I ask that the LNC raise more money as an organization.  The chair and staff did, not specifically in response to my wish but they still granted my "wish".  The chair has asked us to reconsider and support this motion.  I believe in rewarding positive actions.  I also think Joe Buchman is a fine candidate.

I ask those others that voted "No" to reconsider in light of this revelation.
In the scheme of politics, $36,000 isn't a lot of money but it's over 7 times this donation.
Once again my objection overall was money. We of course need to continue to raise money and more money but it's a continuation of a good start.

If people want to see more support of candidates from the LNC, the LNC needs more support from its members.  Keep it coming.

Shout out to our Head of Development, Lauren Daugherty.  She's been working hard setting this stuff up.  A hearty "well done!" To her and the rest of our staff.

Hi all - I am switching my vote to yes, based on the above arguments. However, I strongly recommend that we create a general system as soon as possible.
