Hi

I have been trying to run Linker Mapper in a connectivity analysis in Kenya.

The problem I had is kind of serious and estrange. I have 17 core areas to connect (conservancies in central Kenya). I successfully run the tool using ArcGIS 10.6 using 6 core areas. However, today was the second time that when trying to run the tool, the code crashes when processing core area 10 and then the C drive gets totally deleted. I lost all personal files, even all drop box folders (and all shared projects!), and some software. Windows seems to reset after I restart the PC.

At first, I was having an error at core area 9 that I thought was related to the path. I had a deep path so I decided to move the project to the C drive: C/LMproject. Then the code crashed at code area 10 (nine was not there anymore) and lost all files.

I saw someone on the list had experienced something like this, but I do not think they found a cause of the problem. I now need for IT people to comeback to work to reinstall ArcGIS in my PC to be able to try again, but I am kind of scared at this point on trying to run Linker Mapper again.

My question is if there is something about this issue I should be aware of. I may have missed some discussions about it. I am thinking in trying to run Linker Mapper on a flash drive hoping that if it crashes, it deletes my flash drive and not the c drive as you can imagine it is a pain (I do not have administrator rights on the work PC and the IT guys are not really happy with me haha).

Well, I will appreciate any information you can give me. I am sorry I cannot be more specific with the errors I was getting. I do not remember exactly and as I said, all files were deleted.

Happy new year to all and thank you very much for the help.

Sincerely

Ramiro

Hello Ramiro,

I am not aware of anything like this ever happening to anybody. I think that there must be something else going on in your environment.

That said, I do not have a photographic memory and forget some of the posts, es[ecially from the early years of this discussion group.  I would be happy to read any related posts if you send me the links.

Regarding your situation, yes I agree with your strategy to put as little on your C Drive as possible.

Thanks,

John

Thank you so much John for your response.

The conversation in which they seem to have experienced the same issue is this one: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/linkage-mapper/Jj4Xrp0ye-Q

I just successfully run the analysis I was trying to do in a different desktop. I did set up the working directory to a flash drive. I had a conversation with IT people at the Smithsonian and they do not know what the issue could be. But I suspect was related to setting the working directory directly to the C drive, or there is something going on with the laptop in which I was working before. In any case, I wont try running Linker Mapper again on it :).

I hope this conversation is useful for some other users, but hopefully it was just a specific problem with my laptop.

Thank you very much

Ramiro

Hi Ramiro,

Thanks so much for the update and also pointing out that other thread. I did indeed miss that one.

It is not clear exactly what is going on, and it may be a combination of malware and putting it on the root C drive.

Yes, hopefully this thread is helpful to others in the future, and our plan now is also to have a future release that does not run if the root C: drive is assigned as the working directory.

Thanks,

John

Hello, friends.
I thought I was the only one having this problem, I'm glad and sad to know that it's not like that, haha
I was able to solve the problem and I guess it's because of the windows installation with OneDrive where the user's folder is inserted inside this domain, i.e. C:/OneDrive/Users/etc.
The problem happened to me 4 or 5 times before the Linkage Mapper was successful and by reinstalling Windows without OneDrive I can use it without worry.
I hope my experience helps you, I'll keep an eye on your answers.
And please let me know if you have that OneDrive similarity to analyze alternatives.
Greetings from Chile.

Thank you Estoi,

Sorry to hear that and glad you can laugh about it.

By commenting within this thread, it automatically updates the information that we'll use when we get to the code improvements, so thank you!

Ramiro, if you per chance read this via an auto e-mail, do you remember if you were using OneDrive when the problem was caused?

Thank you both,

John
