1.     High Crash Location Clusters (“Top 200 list”) for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists

MassDOT Highway Division’s edition of the 2012 Top Crash Locations Report , which may be used for a first brush tool to evaluate top crash intersection locations and top crash motorist, pedestrian and bicycle locations in order to improve the safety of our roadway system. This report, like last year’s report, focuses on intersection locations and is based on crashes entered into the Registry of Motor Vehicles’ Crash Data System (CDS). The 2012 Report also contains the identification of top bicycle-motor vehicle and pedestrian-motor vehicle crash locations. This information can be found at http://services.massdot.state.ma.us/maptemplate/TopCrashLocations

Top Crash Locations in Lexington:

If we take out the Route 2 and Route 128 corridor, Lexington has seven high crash location clusters according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).

The seven clusters are shown in the Chart.  The auto clusters are based on 2010 – 2012 data, and the Ped and Bike clusters are based on 2002 – 2012 data as per MassDOT’s latest data sets and protocols.

The EPDO (Equivalent Property Damage Only) is MassDOT’s measure of crash severity by adding the number of non-injury crashes to five times the number of injuries per crash, and ten times the number of fatalities.

There are four high crash clusters along the Lexington Center Streetscape Area.  The one auto cluster is at the Harrington Road/Bedford Street area, the one pedestrian cluster begins at Town Hall and is continuous through just past the Minuteman statue on Bedford Street and Massachusetts Ave.  There are two separate bicycle clusters: one at the Mass//Winthrop/Woburn/Fletcher intersection and a second one which begins just after Waltham Street and continues just past the Minuteman statue; this cluster extends to include the bikeway from Edison way to just past Meriam Street.
