The problem with my question is defining the search terms so that
Google may tell me what I want but, since I seem to fail at that, here
I am, bothering you. :)
There must be some way to toggle the view in body panel/editor between
default view (whatever selected node contains) and recursive view
(content of selected node and all of it's kids).
While waiting for an response, I will research on how contextual menu
in body editor may be altered, so that the command may be inserted
there.
Thanks.

I don't think there is any such functionality - it would be nice, but
is probably also difficult to do right in the body pane. It could
perhaps be done as a viewrendered mode - you could file a wish-list bug.

I use "Edit in ..." for this (available from r-click on node
headline), though that's just a crutch as it's not available without
external files (@file, @shadow, etc.). A "show all children" merged
view would be a welcome function for me.

There is not. It's a frequently requested feature, especially from
newcomers, but it would not be easy to do. In essence the new view
would be ignoring outlining structure. That's not easy to do with
Leo.
As a workaround, you can create an @edit node for any file, even a
file that is defined as an @file node elsewhere in the outline.
