Hi Folks,

When will json-schema be an IETF standard?

What's missing in the current draft that prohibits it from attaining standard status?

Who decides when it attains the status of standard?

Will json-schema become a standard in 2014? 2015? when?

+1, ++1, +++1 for this question.
Do you have any road map? Please let us know.

Thanks

Hi - someone I know at the IETF is talking this people from appropriate working groups this week (IETF 90).

After that, we should have some insight about the interest from various groups, and what kind of roadmap would be good to pursue.

Is there any update on this topic? If there is anything that we can help to push this as a standard, I can definitely contribute.

Indeed!  There seem to be a number of folks willing to help see this move forward.  Last quasi-update was in July from before IETF 90.  Did anything useful come out of those meetings?

Was this brought up at all at IETF 91? I think there could be some interest there but it wasn't presented at either appsawg or the json wg's.

I'm very interested in seeing JSON Schema becoming an IETF standard, because the OASIS OData Technical Committee (https://www.oasis-open.org/committees/odata) is currently defining a JSON format for OData service metadata, and we want to use JSON Schema as the basis for this format.

Any info on current plans is highly welcome.

Hi David,

As you can see there is a huge interest in getting JSON Schema to the IETF standard status. And lots of people are willing to pitch in to make it happen. Can you provide an update to the folks on this mailing list regarding its progress toward becoming a standard? Can you provide an estimate of when it will become a standard? In 2015? 2016? etc.

/Roger

Hi all,

I participate in the IETF, and I am authoring a schema language for JSON called JSON Content Rules (JCR): https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-newton-json-content-rules/ . Let me offer my view on where the IETF currently stands on this topic. Hopefully this will provide some clarity.

At present, there is no official IETF effort for a JSON schema standard. The IETF JSON working group at IETF 89 did discuss rechartering to cover this topic, but it was deemed there was no consensus to do so. That being said, it does not mean the topic is dead. To show the IETF that there is interest in schemas for JSON in general and JSON Schema specifically, once the JSON Schema drafts are submitted to the IETF it would be helpful to have individuals voice their intent to participate in the IETF process to make it a standard.

How does one "voice their intent to participate in the IETF process to make it a standard"?

In this case, by participating on the JSON working group mailing list.

Hi Roger,

I'm sorry for having moved so slowly on this.  Partly I confess I've been short on time and finding some of this rather stressful, but partly the people I've been talking to about IETF stuff have also been busy, so there's been a lot of latency there.

However, I was today introduced to Andy Newton, who as well as having a keen interest in the idea of a JSON constraints language, has experience and insight regarding IETF processes.  We had a very good Skype conversation - he sounded very positive about JSON Schema, and I hope that his engagement is a sign that we can get things moving better.

As Andy posted to the group, the next steps are the v5 draft as an I-D, and making some noise about it on the JSON Working Group list.

I would also like to say to Andy: it's great to have your input on this.

I am as keen as ever to move JSON Schema towards officialdom - however step one is knowing where best to focus our efforts, and your perspective and advice are both very much appreciated on that front.
