Political Coordinator                                Grade: B

 

LOCATION:   Houston, Texas

 

Purpose

This position is responsible for communicating to International Union staff and local leadership all aspects of the SSW Division’s legislative, regulatory and political activities designed to achieve the goals of the National Organizing Program, as directed by the Division Director.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed.  Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.)

 

  • Works with staff of the International Union, Local Unions and State Councils to communicate the Division’s organizing priorities, the Division’s progress in implementing the National Organizing Program, and the growth goals of Local Unions.

 

  • Works with staff of the International Union to develop strategy and analytic materials for lobbying activity — memoranda, fact sheets, prescribed status reports, letters to elected officials, Local unions and outside organizations— and relationships to accomplish the political and legislative goals, campaigns, and other tasks as assigned.  Incumbent sends such necessary materials to Legislators, Locals and others to accomplish these tasks.

 

  • Develops and participates in legislative coalitions with other unions and organizations as deemed appropriate.

 

  • Initiates, develops, responds to, prioritize and completes requests from the SEIU State Council and SEIU Local union staff for assistance on federal, state and local legislative action based on the Division’s issue priorities. 

 

  • Sets up meetings, develops legislative campaigns and provides consultation and training information and materials to facilitate grassroots lobbying activities as assigned.

 

  • Monitors federal legislative and regulatory developments on matters as assigned; conducts research on voting records of elected officials, assists in defining the International Union's issues of concern and furthers the Union's objectives. 

 

  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.

 

 

Education and Experience

 

Bachelors degree; at least two (5) years prior experience working in issues campaigns, political action and election campaigns at a senior level, policy analysis, community advocacy or drafting of legislation or at least two (2) years experience in healthcare, public sector, administrative, or building services, or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

 

  • Thorough knowledge of direct lobbying of elected officials or government agencies and drafting legislation.

 

  • Thorough knowledge of working in issues campaigns, political action and election campaigns at a senior level, policy analysis, community advocacy or drafting of legislation or regulations in relevant issues areas.

 

  • Ability to conduct formal research, analyze data and make sound, logical conclusions.

 

  • Knowledge of unions and their issues.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct training presentations.

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to make formal presentations and write advocacy papers.

 

  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

 

  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects and meet established timelines.

 

  • Skill in the use of personal computers, including the use of MSOffice Suite and information systems for lobbying and electoral activity .

 

  • Ability to communicate political and policy priorities to SEIU members.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish preferred

 

  •   Long and extended hours and travel required.
