Michigan Senate Minority Leader seeks a hardworking Press Secretary to join a busy and proactive team. Applicant must have previous on-the-record experience, thrive at multitasking,  be willing to work long hours and have keen political judgment.

SUMMARY
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: speech writing; drafting news releases, talking points, and op-eds; responding to press inquiries in a timely and appropriate manner; relaying daily news clips; monitoring the news/social media platforms throughout the day. Duties also include: booking media interviews and pitching stories; developing relationships with reporters; organizing press conferences and other events; and developing and implementing media, communications, and public relations strategies. Furthermore, the position will help design and implement short- and long-term communications and messaging strategies. The successful applicant must be a team player and will work closely with the Chief of Staff, Communications Director, and all team members. 
 
This is not an entry-level position. Professional communications and on-the-record experience is required, preferably in the political field. Candidates should have knowledge of the legislative process, as well as the ability to identify local and national press opportunities.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS REQUIRED
  • Assist Senate Democratic Caucus members and leadership in identifying key advocacy issues and then developing and implementing a related message strategy
  • Promote the policy agenda of the Michigan Senate Minority Leader and the Caucus
  • Translate complex and sensitive policy issues into concise statements
  • Develop and grow relationships with media, ally organizations and intermediary groups
  • Build healthy and strong relationships with Caucus Members and their staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned
 
EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations or another related field
  • 5+ years of experience working as a spokesperson or senior communications professional
 
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
  • Experience with message development
  • Experience speaking with media on the record and on background 
  • Experience implementing digital and traditional communications strategies
  • Ability to think quickly and represent issues accurately and appropriately on behalf of the Caucus 
  • Aggressive creative thinker
  • Experience building effective issue-advocacy campaigns
  • Extensive knowledge of the legislative process and current policy issues
  • Thoroughness and careful attention to detail
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in fulfillment of legislative responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others
  • Excellent written and oral communication
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is mainly performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usually moderate
  • Travel (including overnight) may be required, as necessary
 
COMPENSATION
  • Salary is commensurate with experience. A generous benefits package is offered.
  • Position is full-time and based in Lansing, Michigan. Occasional travel required.
 
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid driver’s license.
