JOB TITLE:                   Assistant Press Secretary (California)

FLSA STATUS:             Exempt

REPORTS TO:              Press Secretary

SUMMARY:                 NextGen Climate is seeking a driven, detail-oriented individual to join our organization as an Assistant Press Secretary, focused on California issues. The ideal candidate would have California-specific media experience, including writing press releases and statements, as well as developing relationships with reporters in a campaign environment. This position reports to the NextGen Climate Press Secretary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: “Essential functions” are primarily job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation made by the employer, under the direction of the Press Secretary.

1.     Manage incoming California media and interview requests.

2.     Develop and implement earned media and communications strategies in coordination with California team leadership.

3.     Write and edit press releases, statements, talking points, creative briefs, blog posts and internal message materials under tight deadlines.

4.     Build and maintain relationships with key California reporters, editors, and producers in print, television, online, and radio under the direction of the Press Secretary.

5.     Provide organizational and logistical support for California press events, initiatives and campaign rollouts.

6.     Prepare materials for California interviews and press events.

7.     Monitor and analyze California daily news and drive rapid response.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1.     A bachelor’s degree.

2.     A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a communications field.

3.     Excellent organizational skills.

4.     The ability to adapt rapidly to evolving priorities and deadlines.

5.     Driven with a strong work ethic and demonstrate consistent attention to detail.

6.     Previous California press experience required; on-the-record or significant on-background experience preferred; political or public policy experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature, and the like.
