Witness for Peace is hiring 1-2 people to join the Colombia International Team, to begin training in Bogotá in early March 2015

Join the Witness for Peace (WFP) International Team to work for peace and justice in the Americas! Based in Cuba, Colombia, Honduras and Mexico, International Team members design and plan participatory, experiential educational programs that help visiting groups of U.S. citizens understand the impact of global economics and corporate practices and U.S. foreign, economic and military policies in these countries. Two team members accompany these groups during the two week visits which motivate them to return to the U.S. to participate in campaigns that work for more just policies.

Job Description Witness for Peace International Team in Colombia

Responsibilities of the WFP International Team in Colombia include, but are not limited to:

  1. Design Popular Education Programs: Plan and facilitate two-week experiential educational programs for and accompany groups of 7 to 20 U.S. citizens who visit Colombia. Responsibilities include providing an understanding on the impact of U.S. policies, arranging logistics and providing interpretation.
  2. Strengthen and Maintain Partnerships on the Ground: Although the International Team is based in Bogotá, a substantial amount of time (roughly 50% travel) is spent making contacts with community leaders, civil society groups, labor and environmental groups, human rights defenders and other NGOs both in urban and rural areas. These contacts are vital in order to understand the political, economic and social situation in Colombia and to serve as a basis for planning the educational programs for visiting groups.
  3. Human Rights Work: the International Team supports human rights work in Colombia by providing protective accompaniment, working with staff in the U.S. on urgent actions and advocating with the U.S. Embassy and other officials on human rights and labor rights cases.
  4. Journalistic Documentation: Team members investigate current events in the countries as they relate to global economics and U.S. policies and write articles, short reports and develop educational resources that put a "human face" on the impact of these policies in these countries.
  5. Support U.S. Campaigns to Change U.S. Policies: While organizing in the U.S. is led by the WFP National office and Regional Organizers, the International Team is called on to provide support to these efforts through contact with returned delegates and educational materials, among other things.
  6. Arranging Speakers Tours: In coordination with WfP Regional Organizers in the U.S., identify speakers from Colombia to travel to WfP regions to speak about the impact of U.S. policies. International Team members assist speakers with immigration processes and then accompany and interpret for the speakers throughout their time in the US.
  7. Office Management: Team members are responsible for running the office, including maintaining contact with U.S-based staff, preparing financial reports and budgets

Qualifications for International Team Members:

• Knowledge of and commitment to deepening analysis of U.S. economic and military policies in Colombia, including drug policy, trade and labor, and human rights

• Written and oral fluency in Spanish

• Experience and/or interest in planning participatory educational programs for groups

• Experience working with groups and excellent interpersonal skills

• Experience working abroad, especially in Latin America

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Computer literacy

• Physical endurance and good health

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

• Willingness to live in the physically demanding and at times stressful conditions of a developing country

• Minimum age of 21

• U.S. citizenship

• Commitment to the WFP mission, covenant, and operating principles

Benefits include a monthly stipend (approximately $250 per month), vacation pay, health insurance, dental care, room and board and all-work related transportation costs. After one year, team members receive a ticket to the U.S. and a reentry stipend of approximately $1,000 plus two months of health insurance. During their term team members are encouraged to assist the organization in raising funds for programs. This position is a one-year term with the potential to extend to a second year, pending funding.
