POSITION SUMMARY

The Media Relations Officer will contribute to the development of, and lead the day-to-day execution of, the Center for Gun Responsibility’s Communications Plan. This individual will also serve as the primary interface between the organization and members of the media, and will have primary operational responsibility for the organization’s public profile.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·        Drive the day-to-day production of major Communications Department projects.

·        Play an active role in the development and maintenance of the Center’s Communications Plan

·        Produce public communications materials, such as press releases and advisories, talking points and remarks, op-eds and editorial, and other materials as appropriate

·        Develop, resource, and executive project-specific and event-specific Communications Plans, integrating all communications methods (social, traditional, digital, etc.)

·        Develop and monitor a budget for the Communications Department

·        Interact with members of the Board of Directors under the guidance of the Executive Director

·        Oversee the development of a robust Social and Digital media presence using leading social media platforms

·        Maintain meaningful relationships with key members of the news media

·        Recruit, interview, and manage interns as needed and available


RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Does not supervise any staff but will coordinate the work of peers on departmental project teams. May supervise volunteers, interns or temporary staff.
  • Duties are performed under general supervision and established guidelines.
  • Opportunity to act independently on assigned tasks and projects. May have full opportunity to direct individual projects.
  • Refers questions to supervisor.
  • Works within a budget to complete a project. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business Management, Digital Media or related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating projects.
  • Experience proofreading documents.
  • Experience using all MS Office suite software.
  • Solution-oriented attitude with demonstrated initiative, problem-solving skill, and desire to achieve the strongest possible outcome

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work in a team-based environment with internal and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and write creatively for various audiences from technical information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to articulate ideas in a compelling manner.
  • Practical knowledge of marketing and branding principles.
  • Strong time management skills, organization skills and attention to detail.
  • On-the-Record media experience
  • Experience managing elected officials or other executive-level principals
