Deputy Political Director

SEIU Local 509 – Watertown, MA

The Human Service Workers Union, SEIU Local 509, represents over 17,000 workers throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A little more than one-third of its members work in the public sector and provide social, rehabilitation and educational services for some of the state’s most vulnerable and at-risk citizens. Another third of its members work in the state funded private sector human service industry where SEIU Local 509 is largest and fastest growing union representing these workers. The final third are home-based family child care providers who accept vouchers from the state.

General Statement of Duties
  • Will coordinate Local 509’s Member Political Organizer (MPO) program, specifically by mobilizing, training, and educating member leaders and activists for electoral and legislative activity.
  • Will coordinate Local 509’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) solicitation efforts.
  • Will assist in lobbying the Massachusetts Legislature in support of the Local’s legislative and budget priorities.
  • Will coordinate the Local’s Online Lobbying program through bluestatedigitial.com.
  • Special events planning and coordination (Lobby Days, Press Conferences, etc)
  • Prepares fact sheets and other written materials for legislative, budget, and political campaigns, including articles for Local 509 News.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
  • 3-5 years experience designing and implementing a political action program for a union, progressive candidate, and/or grassroots organization.
  • Demonstrated strong writing ability and the ability to communicate union’s goals, particularly with respect to growing COPE and increasing member participation in lobbying efforts and political campaigns.
  • Ability to speak and present to various size audiences.
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with databases and e-mail programs.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends, including travel throughout the state and some out of state travel.
  • Commitment to progressive social change.
Supervision
Position will report to the Political Director.

Salary and Benefits

$56,798 – $64,886, depending on experience, with generous benefits package, including car allowance.
