COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR – TRANSITION OFFICE OF MAYOR – ELECT MURIEL BOWSER

JOB SUMMARY:

The Communications Director for Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser’s Transition Team will be responsible for developing and implementing the communications effort for the Mayor-Elect.  The Director of Communications must be an accomplished communicator with excellent writing, critical thinking and oral skills, have a broad knowledge of the news media, politics, policy and government.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Lead and manage the creation of a comprehensive strategic communications effort to maximize public exposure of the Mayor-Elect.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the news media, team members and the public

Develop and implement media strategies targeting both traditional mainstream media, online, and new media while developing and maintaining relationships with bloggers, television bookers, print reporters, columnists, and editorial staff

Write and disseminate press releases, op-ed pieces, newsletters, feature articles, fact sheets, issue papers, presentations, and testimony in support of the Mayor-Elect’s initiatives

Create compelling and persuasive strategy papers, talking points, articles, websites, social media, and other communications on a variety of issues

Plan and direct the preparation of informational materials to be used by print and electronic media, professional publications, and the public

Organize news conferences, media briefings, and teleconferences

Evaluate communication efforts and achievements while recommending appropriate modifications

SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Demonstrate the ability to formulate, articulate, and coordinate an overall communications plan that integrates the Mayor Elect’s messaging and conveys complex information regarding policies, programs, and decisions

Demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills in developing presentations, pitching stories to media outlets and developing instructional materials, including writing, editing, and dissemination

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field is required; graduate level degree preferred.

Salary commensurate with experience

At will and FLSA Exempt position
