Reports To: SVP of Strategic Initiatives

Positions Reporting To This Position: none at this time

General Description:

LCV works to turn environmental values into national, state and local priorities.  LCV, in collaboration with its state LCV partners, advocates for sound environmental laws and policies, holds elected officials accountable for their votes and actions, and elects pro-environment candidates who will champion our priority issues.  LCV is hiring an Ohio Campaigns Director to help lead its efforts to build long-term power for the Ohio environmental community around clean energy and environmental policies in this critically important state.  The Campaigns Director will be expected to use multiple strategies and tools to ensure effective and creative activities and programs designed to build LCV’s presence, respect, credibility, and power in Ohio.  

This position is primarily based in Columbus and will work closely with the Ohio State Director (based in Cleveland) and other national staff, as well as state leagues in the Midwest (Michigan LCV, Wisconsin LCV and Conservation Minnesota).

Responsibilities:

Monitor and analyze the political landscape in concert with the Ohio State Director and others to determine programmatic goals and adjust programmatic priorities appropriately ;

Develop and direct public education, advocacy, and electoral programs; ensure successful implementation of programs;

Develop and manage state legislative, executive, and agency accountability tools and publications;

Work with LCV field and online engagement staff to build and activate LCV membership;

Build relationships with, and advocate for our issues with elected officials and the executive branch on priority issues; 

Work collaboratively with national and state environmental groups and other traditional and non-traditional allies to build and strengthen power in Columbus within the environmental and progressive movement;

Assist with cultivating relationships with major donors and funders;

Assist Ohio State Director and communications team to develop and oversee communications plan, including traditional and online press strategies and social media; provide content for advocacy and electoral programs;

Ensure compliance and reporting of all Ohio-based activities in collaboration with Legal and Finance departments; and,

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: College degree in political science, communications, or related field.

Work experience: At least five years of issue advocacy and/or electoral campaign experience, particularly with message development, campaign plans, paid media, and voter contact. Prior management of candidate or independent campaigns a plus.  Demonstrated relationship with political opinion leaders, members of executive branch and legislature and political party committees.

Skills and capabilities: Strong interpersonal and communications skills; commitment to bipartisanship; entrepreneurial focus; ability to work collaboratively; demonstrated relationship building skills; solid judgment; critical thinking skills; a sense of teamwork and community; ability to handle multiple tasks; highly organized; excellent management, program development and organizational skills. Knowledge of environmental issues desirable, background, knowledge and/or experience with Ohio politics a plus.

Management:  Oversees creative and aggressive legislative accountability and/or electoral work.  Must work well in a fast-paced environment and be able to multi-task without sacrificing quality of work. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Understands environmental issues and their potential to engage the public. 

Conditions: Ability to work overtime with little notice; ability and willingness to travel.
