Anyone notice a lack of Java developers in the past few months?

I have been getting tons of calls from recruiters, some from my resume being on file over 4 years ago. I live in the Cincinnati Ohio area and it seems that they are unable to find any Java developers. I have seen some recruiters starting to offer to pay overtime, signing bonuses, and bonus plans based on overtime hours and longevity with the company.

It just seems odd to me since about 1.5 years ago I was looking and couldn't find a job at all. Now I get about 3-5 phone calls and emails a week and the recruiters all seem to be dumbfounded as to where to look. I know the weather isn't great here, but the cost of living is very nice. :)

There's definitely a surge in Java recruitment. :-) But I'm happy where I am.

I'm not expecting anyone to move. I just want to learn more about everyone else's experience with this new surge in recruitment. I haven't seen it this strong before.

I can't say it's very strong (in Belgium that is), but once in while the recruiters all start head-hunting.

They're probably in a fierce competition in Europe. With this never ending crisis and sorts there's not enough demand any more for their competences.

I think you'll find a lot in your state in the Columbus area.  I know that my client is struggling to recruit in that area, probably because they already employ practically all the Java programmers around.

Specifically Java developers or software developers generally?  There's been a shortage of software developers in the UK for a few years now.  Too many kids seem to think it's either too difficult or too boring (thank the schools for the latter).

I'm at the point where I am hiring c# developers and training them.  Last real java dev that we were able to find we had to import from Denver and he lasted a month before he got homesick and left

Maybe you should look at remote work or relocating.  I know that I've worked for a company whose main product is hardware, but managed to work from home at times without problems, so I expect most other Java developers could more easily.

Most companies here in Ohio are still old school when it comes to hiring and work environment. The person has to keep the chair warm, no remote work or if there is, it is a privilege which usually gets yanked at the first crisis and never reinstated. They don't do much in the way of questioning and so learn the hard way if the person is a good developer or not. Salaries are low but thankfully due to the shortage that has been going up if you are a Senior Developer, especially with Java experience and all the libraries that go along with it.

The schools here are still doing some Java training, but the new graduates all want to use an easier language so they pick PHP or VB. They don't have much strength in programming and struggle dealing with difficult issues.

Paypal contacted someone I know for a remote worker position so they can stay here in Ohio but travel to California periodically. He does .NET but is a great UI developer as well. I don't see many opportunities for people around here for doing exciting work as we have lots of insurance, grocery, banking, financial services and health care. That is the bulk of the jobs and they all tend to be about as exciting as watching paint dry.

I think unexciting jobs is the case everywhere in the US that's not East or West coast. I'm in Rochester NY and although the apps are complex (payroll, telecom, publishing, health insurance are big here), there's nothing very advanced technically. Aside from being a University professor certainly nothing requiring a PhD, and only a handful of positions where masters-level work would be required.

That being said, it's a great area to raise a family in with a low cost of living, and the market for both kinds of developers (Java and .Net, natch :-) ) is finally starting to pick up enough that companies are beginning to worry about retention.

Java dev in general or specific areas of java dev?  With the rise of client-side javascript I'm seeing ( in NZ at least ) more and more jobs wanting the JS skills for front ends, there is a resurgence of java work for backend guys doing cassandra/hadoop etc. but that doesn't seem to have hit the main stream yet...

This is far more a shortage of quality developers in all camps.  I'm sure some geographic areas have more shortage of one tech vs another, but I routinely get emails/calls for Java and PHP (the biggest things on my resume) as well as occasionally some .Net and Perl gigs, with the random Ruby contact now and then.  My recruiter friends are telling me they're just having hard times filling any tech position at all.

How long will this last?  No idea, but it's nice while it's happening :)

I'm not sure but haven't the US been saying something about changing the visas so it's harder to get resources from abroad and bring them over?

I have been looking for help with a couple projects and while I have found lots for UI, Javascript, and jQuery; I haven't found much help for Java and Web Services. Well, not help I could afford anyway. Most of the help I have found want $100 / hr and so I have started looking to Europe. There seem to be people there available and for much better rates.
