I was wondering what subscribers of the Java Posse actually do when they are listening to the podcast.

Me, for instance, I have selected the inglorious time of dish washing :-).

For me it's driving to/from work. Helps to be patient in traffic jams. "Get educated while you wait". If THAT isn't progress, what is it ? :-P

... and so as not to worry the Java Posse hosts, I just wanted also to point out that it has made dish washing a much better experience than before!

Commute on the train for me too.

45mins each way, soon run out of JavaPosse so have to trawl for other stuff, any good suggestions?

If you're in Scala: http://scalatypes.com/

And if you're in Linux: http://sixgun.org/

I don't know about other - good - Java podcasts though...

I listen to it in the office. I'm not organised enough to remember to copy it to my MP3 player (on which I mainly listen to FM radio anyway).

Verge cast is pretty good.
Fighting talk from the bbc if you are interested in British sports is hysterical.
There is a bunch of other bbc stuff,
Friday night comedy podcast and the kermode and mayo film show.

You could try writing excuses,  i am not really an aspiring writer but find the podcast really entertaining.

Thanks for the ideas, I listen to quite few of the suggestions scalatypes, se-radio, bbc comedy), must be on a similar wavelength

Bit dry, but I've given Java Pub House a go (sppoky I found it in itunes the week before Dick mentioned it), never looked at or needed to know anything about Aspects, but his delve has interested me.

Java Spotlight is decent for Java & community news; Basement Coders is a fun listen, too.

The commute drains my listening pool each week as well. Can't Java Posse go to a daily format? ;-)

I can only listen to podcasts in the car. When I have tried to listen to them at my desk (either in my office, or at home), I discovered pretty quickly that I end up tuning out the podcast, because I'm concentrating on some other work/browsing/reading. I realize about 10 minutes later that I have no idea what they've been talking about.

The only time I have found that works is either driving or exercising. I have stopped during exercising because I don't want to stop and jot something down if I want to look something up. And since I don't drive much I'm having trouble now keep up.

Are you implying that you would jot stuff down whilst driving, but not when exercising?

Isn't that dangerous?

Do I have to spell it out? Seriously?

I can use my Android to make a voice note or just pull over. When exercising I don't want to stop. And there is no way I'm going to exercise with a really expensive device near by.

FYI, here is the process I use to transfer non-podcasts to my phone. I would certainly not bother doing this if I had to plug my phone in to copy the podcasts on it.

Maybe not "MP3 players", strictly speaking.  But if you care in the slightest about a "digital music player" that handles non-Apple lossless formats and has a decent DAC, then you better believe that they exist!

Not everyone is content to live with the relentless onslaught of poor quality bundled headphones, over-compressed MP3s and all the dynamic range of a shuttle launch.

Cowon do some good devices aimed at audiophiles, as do Fiio.  For the ultimate wallet-buster though, The HifiMan HM-801 surely has to be the most extravagant device on the market!

Personally, I never fail to be impressed with my little Sansa Clip+, coupled with a pair of these:

Though I personally think that I can get better out of the device, and I'm looking to upgrade the headphones just as soon as I can afford it...

Yes, my phone also plays MP3s. I bought this device because, unlike
my phone, it supports FM radio. Listening to the radio is one of the
few things I miss from my car-owning days.

Any many exercise places have the TV's on FM radio if you care to watch them while on a bike or treadmill.

Now that's just ironic!  One of the very few things I use my phone for (audio-wise) is to listen to FM radio.

On an interesting tangent, I also discovered that there's a rockbox build available for my li'l old Sansa Clip+.  so no more aac->flac conversions are required, it can play them directly.  Better still, I can now listen to it whilst also charging the thing.  Yay! Go open source :)

I ever there was a portable music player that "could"...

As for the Java angle, I've just started whipping up a ScalaFX (JavaFX2 + Scala DSL) GUI to select composers/artists/album artists that I can cross-sync to the thing.  (and yes, I'm one of those awkward people with an eclectic enough rangle that I must make the distinction between the three)

Daily commute one hour each way.

I listen to so many podcasts that I consider essential, I rarely get
through them in a week. Not only that, I'm finding that my addiction
is at the expense of reading some techy books or trying stuff out on a
laptop. I get very little time at home with 2 young kids.

Here's a list of my podcasts:

BBC (I'm a licence fee payer so I think I'm entitled unlike you foreigners!)

Daily Bacon
Desert Island Discs (will skip people I don't know)
Dr Karl and the Naked Scientist
Food Programme
Four Thought
Friday Night Comedy
Front Row Daily
In Our Time
The Infinite Monkey Cage
Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo Film Reviews
Medical Matters
Money Box
The Report
Science Weekly

Other
FT Money Show
HansleMinutes
Java Posse
Money Talk from Fool.co.uk
NPR:Planet Money
PC Pro podcast (excellent, up to date, weekly)
Tech Weekly (Guardian)
This American Life

Believe me, I would like to cut back and I do skip episodes that don't
interest me (or are really bad quality like some round up talks) but
it still takes a large chunk of time!! Yes I know, why am I
complaining about their being TOO MANY excellent podcasts!

Rakesh
