You know, I'm a bit frustrated by recurrent discussion about language
trends because we lack a solid statistics base. We all know the
limitations of Tiobe, and we all end up citing Tiobe.

What do you think about LinkedIn skill trends? Do you think they are more
reliable?

How do we define popularity/trend? (jobs, qualifications, usage, tags, searches, literature, courses etc.)

How large is this sliding window? (too fine grained a resolution drowns in spikes/noise)

How do we categorize/group related stuff? (Does .NET or ASP get included both in C#, F#, Visual Basic?)

I always like to have a look at StackOverflow trends as it's tech agnostic and a high-traffic site.

There is no shortage on Java jobs, but again, this depends on how you define popular/trend:

Not against StackOverflow - another good source. So, my point is: both
LinkedIn and StackOverflow (and possibly others) offer a data source with
richer semantics than a google search, like Tiobe does. Of course, even LI
and SO would need to be post-processed by some statistics-savvy people to
produce some meaningful trend. Is somebody doing? If yes, where? If not,
why? Perhaps the only serious trend analysis are done by professional
agencies and aren't free, but offered as paid services?

The analyst firm RedMonk has been doing this for at least 2-3 years now - I highly recommend checking out their findings.

Also, http://careers.stackoverflow.com/ "featured jobs" gives a trend in tech jobs
