One Software Patent I'd Like To See Used

(One last gasp on the patents debates.)

With all the other software patents, I'm sure it can't be too
difficult to patent the annoying bleeps, pleeps and dinkly-bonks that
get play on just about everything when you turn them on, even when the
volume is turned off.

This first started to annoy me with our Sony TV, because I often turn
the telly on after everyone has gone to bed and it has this really
loud bong-bong-bong noise. The TV speakers are routed through the hi-
fi, except for this fanfare which is played independent of any setting
that I can find.

Since then I've noticed that both my iMac and Android phone do this,
too, and neither appear to have the ability to turn the noises off.
This weekend I bought a GPS, opened the box and turned it on. Guess
what? Bippity-boppity-donk. It's driving me mad. But there is a ray
of hope; on the GPS it can be turned off. Ditto, on my camera. So
why not Sony, Apple and Android?

Arrrgh!

I share your pain - I often work late when my wife's asleep, and the startup sound of my Macbook is infuriating then.

On the Mac, there's a startup sound control panel though it doesn't always work reliably and is not compatible with Lion. Both my iPhone and my iPad are silent when launching, fortunately. :-)

Damn! Guess what I've got. :)

My Samsung and LG TV's does this as well (the Sammy even comes with sound when you turn it off!). If you install CyanogenMod on your Android device, you can disable the sound. It's as if manufactures found out "Oh, this is a freakin' computer, let's hook into the lifecycle and do... something".

My Samsung Galaxy S2 drivers me nuts in that regard. It even has a
loud beeping sound to indicate that the phone is fully charged, so if
you put the phone on charge next to the bed when you go to sleep
you'll be woken at 2am from this useless signal.
It also _cannot_ be turned off without muting the entire phone - which
in turn might cause you to miss important stuff like phone calls and
reminders. I'm about ready to root it and put some stock android there
just to get rid of that one "feature".

Listening to the radio, yesterday, I heard someone say:

"Why does my phone switch on with a loud jingle and then say 'Quietly
Brilliant!'?"

I've often thought this myself. Especially when the phone has just spontaneously rebooted.
