Hi,

is there anyone in the area who does Landscape CAD or knows of someone who does?

Asking for friends in Cobargo who'd like to discuss options for their business.

cheers, Harry

Curious to know more about this.

I am a bit of an expert on Sketchup but haven’t applied to landscaping per se. Have done some similar work – a couple of land profiles to see how house designs might look in specific locations on site.

Happy to meet your friends to understand their needs further.

Andrew

Are you talking about a specific product "Landscape CAD", or about the
generic process of using CAD for landscaping?

Regards, K.

Would GIS/Mapping tools apply?

QGIS I believe is a free and open source room that has fairly radically shaken up the GIS space

We use BricsCAD and Civil Site Design for all our site earthworks and grading -  might be of use.
And another +1 for QGIS - great software, and a constant stream of plugins to do all kinds of useful things.

Cheers,
Lachlan.

yeah, have used Sketchup a bit myself too.
Not sure if it is as usable for getting land profiles and contours as some of the professional tools that Lachlan mentions.

I guess there are a couple of points here.

Doing a bit of digging shows that Sketchup has import support for several standard terrain data formats.

Secondly, Sketchup is owned by Trimble these days who are a major name in surveying and mapping technology – so they have a vested interest in this application.

Thirdly, I haven’t scratched the surface of plugins/extensions that may be available to make this easy.

What I have done is manually constructed reasonably accurate site maps using location and elevation data.  It just isn’t what I use Sketchup for on a day-to-day basis so I haven’t dived into this use case in any detail.

These may be of interest:

A dedicated/specialist package will likely do a better job at specific tasks.
