It’s a shame this isn’t mounted on a rolling platform instead of a drone, makes far more sense wouldn’t it to have weed detecting/picking happening on a ground based device?

Dean

"Liam O'Duibhir, Director, SoccerFit" <lia...@soccerfit.com.au>: Nov 08 07:38PM +1100

We are very fortunate with the December code night at CoWS (Thursday 6th
Dec) that a terrific Cooma-based tech, Darren McIntosh, will grace us with
a presentation on the use of Drones/UAVs for surface imaging combined with
Artificial Intelligence to detect weeds (with a view to elimination).

Darren has had some success in this area and is part of a Council-supported
Cooma based project to look at the viability of this in reality in farmland
across the Monaro.

Darren also did the coding in Python, and he assures me that *there will be
ample Python code on the screens and whiteboards about the place for lovers
of that language*...and for everyone else, I think Darren may welcome some
friendly anti-Python banter :-)

And those of you in the 'Fortran on iOS/Android movement'...maybe sit this
one out :-)

More on this closer to the day...hope you make it...a great way to code out
the end of what has been a truly unequalled and magnificent year for tech,
innovation and startups in the Bega Valley....

See ya there.

Liam

Dean perhaps chat with Darren but I believe that is the forward plan

A flying drone does not depend on good terrain; wheeled drones do.
Legged drones less so.

A lot of the following does not apply to areas not being used for
cropping. Also, I'm not an agronomist so I could be wrong on all this.

All ground based devices compress the soil as they move over it. This
affects moisture penetration through the surface and how much water the
soil can hold below the surface. The heavier the vehicle the greater
the compression. Compression affects germination and how water, seeds,
shoots, roots and soil fauna move through the soil.

The depressions created by feet or wheels deprive neighboring soil of
rainwater and the related raised ridges dry out, so they too are less
able to support germination and growth.

Depressions are focal points for erosion, especially if the depression
is long (such as made by a wheel), allowing flow to develop. Free water
can drown seeds and soil fauna; flowing water can carry topsoil and
seed, herbicide, insecticide and fertiliser away. Fertiliser, herbicide
and insecticide do damage wherever they end up, and if they are soluble
that can be in a lot of places. Carried seeds concentrate wherever the
flow slows, leaving them crowded and unable to develop as well. Flows
may remove seed from the harvestable area altogether; if they survive,
then best case they are unusable and worst case they become a weed. Any
seed, herbicide, insecticide or fertiliser taken off the harvestable
area is a waste. Loss of soil is obviously a bad thing too.

Legged drones would avoid long depressions, but not the other problems
of compression. Pointed feet create more compression around them than a
flat foot creates, and take the damage deeper. Wide flat feet are only
useful before seed has germinated, otherwise they damage the crop.

Flying delivery of herbicide, insecticide or fertiliser and for that
matter seed is way less damaging.

There's probably a lot more to it than this - the weight of a land-
based vehicle affects how badly it compresses the soil, the water
content of soil affects how badly it gets compressed, there can be an
acceptable tradeoff between area compressed and area tilled (i.e., if
you have to have a track for a harvester anyway, you can use the same
track for delivering seed, herbicide, insecticide and fertiliser), a
drone cannot detect or deliver where the crop is taller than a certain
height...

Regards, K.

The problem can be split into a couple of themes:

1) Local Councils are the entity responsible for compliance to the Biosecurity Act. Snowy-Monaro council covers an area roughly the size of East Timor and helicopters are commonly used today (probably $1500/hour)

2) Once identified, the farmer has options on how they address the problem depending on the percentage infestation. How is that measured?

So the job of the UAV is to collect survey data at scale. I didn't have access to a fixed wing drone for the PoC, but some of them can cover almost 2000 acres in a single mission. The aerial survey is then analysed with some network-based application that estimates a response plan, which could involve ground-based resources like intelligent boom sprays, autonomous farm rovers etc.

Things are shaping up nicely for Thursday’s Code Night at CoWS...

I will be doing a radio spot on ABC South East on Monday morning at 9:30 am to talk it up...and it got featured in the SCPA (South Coast Producers Association) newsletter this morning too...so reckon it will be a great event and a super way to finish an absolutely stellar year like no other...

Hope you make it...

Just to let you know we are organising a meeting of top Earth Observation scientists in Canberra mid December to workshop Earth Obs and Citizen Science applications. Seems like a strong relationship here. How do drone images mesh with satellite and where can citizens contribute to better science?

It will be good to have your thoughts on this following the code night explorations.
