This tree was photographed near Bagdogra, Darjeeling distt in April.
Leaves are beautifully heart-shaped and the white figs (I am assuming
they are figs) have prominent stalks.
Any ideas on what it could be?

Hi, Tabish ji,
It appears to be Mallotus nudiflorus (syn. Trewia nudiflora) as per earlier Indiantreepix thread: http://groups.google.co.in/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/15958fe83e0eeee2, though there was some difference of opinion.

... a view of Mallotus nudiflorus that I have at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/2498986447/ shows a tell-tale divide, as well as some part of flower persistent at the fruit's tip.

Garg ji, as you see, Tabish ji's photo has got be some other fruit.
Regards.

Then it may be some other species of Mallotus as pointed out by Neil ji in the earlier Indiantreepix thread, but appears to be same as mine. The link: http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/ThaiEuph/ThMspecies/ThMallotus.htm#Mallotus_nudiflorus, gives numerous species of Mallotus of which the following are stated to be found in that area:

Mr Garg,
I went through various species of Mallotus one by one. Although
there is a close resemblance between the leaves of my tree posted
here, and those of some Mallotus species, one feature which appears to
be common to all Mallotuses is that the fruits are lobed capsules. So,
probably this is not the right direction.
Best wishes

... Garg ji, I am not sure why the fruits shown for Mallotus nudiflorus at http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/ThaiEuph/ThMspecies/ThMallotus.htm#Mallotus_nudiflorus, different from what I have at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/2498986447/

Even the size of fruit mentioned is almost twice of what I have been considering as M. nudiflorus.

Will have to re-study ... I do not know what is wrong !! ... and I will be back.

Regards.

Hi, Tabish ji,
I don't think so. See Mallotus nudiflorus (also found in India) fruit as given at http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/ThaiEuph/ThMspecies/ThMallotus.htm#Mallotus_nudiflorus, which I am attaching

Dear Mr Garg,
This is certainly becoming very interesting. It is possible that the
fruits in my picture, are unripe versions of the fruits in the
pictures which you posted. Yet, they don't seem to agree with Dinesh's
picture of fruits, which I believe to be of M. nudiflorus. Guess I
need to study this issue in more details. Will get back with my views
later. Thanks for putting forth your views very clearly.
Best wishes
