It would be nice to be able to turn off the Computer Vision / AI suggestions on the website.

1) Sometimes it gets stuck on "Loading suggestions...." and I have to delete/retype the taxon name or refresh for the search results to appear.

2) Could toggling it off help improve processing speed on the desktop uploader?

3) There are times I would prefer not to see the "cheatsheet" when adding IDs. :)

I have this problem all the time, and it did seem like the interface was faster before it was added.

Same sort of thing with the auto-suggestions modifying usernames when I tag somebody--could this be fixed please?

the algorithm seems slow to load today on the website, too

But that assumes that it is the AI feature that causes it to get stuck. I've noticed it sometimes gets stuck even when I've typed out the full scientific name. You'd think that it would no longer be trying to guess the sp in such a case. It can be frustrating when it does this.

An illustration of the issue: full name is typed out but it hangs on "Loading suggestions..."

Several hundred observations of this is pretty painful.

Yeah I have the same problem. I like the option of AI, but it shouldn't engage when I know the ID and I'm just trying to type it in. Perhaps a clickable option would be better to engage the AI?

Is the computer vision suggestion process activated just by starting to type a species, or don't you have to actively initiate it by asking for suggestions ?

If it is slow when manually entering a species name, isn't that more likely an auto-complete issue ?

No, on the uploads page and individual observation pages, it's activated and begins searching right when you click in the box that says "Species name," even before you start typing.

I did not phrase that well, once you start typing, does it not flip over to a text search / auto complete based on what you've started typing, not a vision algorithm suggestion.

Often no--see #1 above :)

I actually like that the Identification I start typing completes on its own. Saves me looking up spellings and typing time. It should not be hard to override, as it occasionally is wrong, but I really would prefer to not have to click something to initiate it. Maybe it could be a “setting” so that people could opt in or opt out once rather than with every observation.

I personally haven't had the problem cassi described in #1 of her original post, but because we are updating the code underlying the updater (and other parts of the site) it would be good to see if this is still happening to you with the updated code. You can test the updated version on our test server, gorilla.inaturalist.org. More information can be found in this thread, and please add your feedback there as well.

Well, we just released what was on gorilla to the standard inaturalist.org site, so let us know if there you are still experiencing this on www.inaturalist.org now. :-)
