I am involved in a couple of projects; my own yard, and James River Park.  Anyway, I would really like to be able to see a project species list in taxonomic order.  All I can seem to do is get it in the order that species were observed, which is next to worthless as it is just a list in nearly random order.

Thanks!

Can you include a URL to the list you're referring to? If its via the 'project list' button on the right of the project page theres a 'Taxonomic' button at the top of the list you can use

I don't have a "taxonomic" button on my project - there used to be one but now it appears to be gone:  http://www.inaturalist.org/projects/pecan-lake; nor does there seem to be a method to order by taxonomy on observations within the project: http://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&project_id=2712&subview=table&verifiable=any

Are several of us missing something obvious?

Thanks,
Monica

Hi Monica -

If you click on 'Species' http://www.inaturalist.org/observations?project_id=2712&place_id=any&verifiable=any&view=species you'll be redirected to the Observations Search page set up to filter observations by your project and will see a list of the species represented by your project's observations in order of frequency. You currently can't use the Observations Search page to order by taxonomy. But thats something we'd like to add soon.

There is an undocumented/unlinked way to do that by manually entering a URL like this: http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/taxa?projects=2712&verifiable=any&rank=leaves

I think some of the confusion is coming by mixing Observation Search functionality (which allows you to filter observations by your project and view them as a distinct list of species) and Project List functionality (allows you to make a list and have it display on your project). The Project List is completely separate from Observation Search. Its just an iNaturalist List, but iNaturalist Lists do have 'taxonomic sorting' views. You can add listings to it manually and it also automatically creates listings for any research-grade observation in your project.

We made Project Lists opt-in only, so they don't display on your project unless you activate them. If you want to display the Project List on your project, click 'Display link to project list from project page' from your project's 'edit' page.

We're hoping to revisit Lists this year. There are several known problems with how iNaturalist manages listings.

Scott

Thanks so much, Scott.  The undocumented way is exactly what I remember seeing in the past - although I don't remember how I got there.

Would very much like to see observations sorted by taxonomy so hope the ability is added.

I've never bothered with a Project List as a number of mine aren't research grade (some IDed by non-iNat experts or impossible to get to genus by image).  Since I don't choose to take the time to add them manually I'd only get a subset of what should be in a Project List.

Thanks again,
Monica

I am  new to INat, and was looking to sort observations taxonomically.  it seems like it would be a basic, necessary function.  I've added several hundred observations the past few days, but can't see how to see sort them taxonomically.  Is that functionality there yet?  If not, do you expect it will be?  Thank you.

They do sort taxonomically in your life list, i believe.

Thanks for the quick response  - I’m not concerned with my life list, really, but when I’m looking at observations it would be much easier to compare taxa, say, within a specific group, if they were all grouped together.  Seems like basic functionality for a project like this.  In the thread I referenced, Scott, an INat person I think, indicated that they hoped to fix it soon (that was in 2016) : " You currently can't use the Observations Search page to order by taxonomy. But thats something we'd like to add soon.

Yeah, i guess my point is if you are just looking at your species list, you can get that information, even if you don't care about life lists. It's a workaround, kinda, depending on what you are doing.

Yes wish there is a sort by taxonomy function in all views
