2.3 upgrade regenerate thumbnails

Hi,
regenerating thumbnails in an upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3 gives the following error

PHP Fatal error:  Can't use function return value in write context in /var/www/html/atom-2.3.0/plugins/sfThumbnailPlugin/lib/sfImageMagickAdapter.class.php on line 403

Is it because I don't have apache FOP installed?

Could this be because I'm still on php-5.4.
Is php-5.5 an absolute requirement for version 2.3?

Hi George,

Yes, our Requirements page includes minimum recommended requirements - I believe that there might be some functions used in AtoM 2.3 that are not available in PHP 5.4. I can't definitively say that this is the cause of the issue, but it's a good place to start.

As far as I know, Apache FOP is only used to generate PDF or RTF finding aids from your archival descriptions.

If you're able to upgrade PHP, I recommend you do so, and let us know if that resolves the issue.

See below from the installation instructions for 2.3 for Ubuntu 14.04 (athough I'm on RHEL6).

PHP 5.4 should be OK (!).

You will need to ensure that you have at leat PHP 5.4 or higher installed - we use PHP 5.5 in development - in addition to a number of PHP extentions, described below.

Hi George,

I'm still not 100% sure if the PHP version is the issue or not, but my sincere apologies - it appears that this is a place where we neglected to update the docs. I have checked with the developers and there is some code in the 2.3 version that relies on PHP 5.5 or higher. I'll be updating the documentation shortly. Sorry again for any hassle this has caused.

Eventually upgraded our development PHP to version 5.6 from the remi repository.
Regenerating thumbnails completed OK.
