Greetings AtoM Community,

After many months of exciting development work, we are pleased to make the Archives Canada Demo Site available for you to review: http://archivescanada.accesstomemory.org/.
Archives Canada is running on the new AtoM 2.0 - Interim 1, and displaying a customization of the new Dominion theme. For more information about the AtoM 2.0 development schedule and the upcoming release, and its relationship to the current ICA-AtoM 1.3.1 branch and the ICA-AtoM 1.4 development and upcoming release, please view: www.accesstomemory.org.

AtoM Users will notice that the UI has undergone extensive redesign to showcase digital collections, improve navigation to archival resources through faceted search results and provide better context for the relationships and links between records, persons and institutions. We are also excited to announce that AtoM 2.0 will be mobile friendly!

Our aim in releasing access to the Archives Canada Demo Site is to receive constructive feedback from our amazing Community of Users! Please remember that AtoM 2.0 is in-development. Feel free to respond to this announcement by starting a thread in the ICA-AtoM User Forum.

Regards,
Jessica Bushey

Thank you for the kind words! Yes it will be possible to upgrade from 1.3.1 to 2.0. We are working hard to finalize the code and create some installation and upgrading documentation to help users get 2.0 running. We expect the 2.0 release to be available on September 30th. Stay tuned!

Yes, it is! :-D

We are still working on the public release (AtoM 2.0.0), it will come out soon. In the meanwhile, you can check out the code from our repository and start playing with it. If you are familiar with git, you just need to run the following command to download the code:

I can also provide you with a tarball if you need it.
We actually would really appreciate some feedback from our users.

I tried to install it to test it but I've had problems with installation. Is it a functional version?

Well, we are still working on some issues and it's still considered unstable, but it definitely works. There are some new dependencies like php-apc or php5-curl, ElasticSearch, etc... it's not documented yet. Are you familiar with Vagrant/VirtualBox? I have a box ready with everything configured out of the box. Let me know if you are interested. Planning to launch it publicly at some point but I wanted to do some testing before.

Yes, it will be possible. In fact, the upgrade process will be pretty similar (tools:upgrade-sql, search:populate, etc...).
The templates have changed a lot though, so any theme in 1.x will require some extra work to be adapted.

We're planning to document the process as soon as we can.

Thank you for your interest!

Hi Jesus;

in fact, I have problems with ElasticSearch.

I am not familiar with Vagrant/VirtualBox for the moment, but I will learn. It would be amazing if you can pass me the box.

Check out this website:

I've just added that page as part of our new docs which are still work in progress. Any feedback is welcome.

Let us know how it goes! :)

This should be fixed as of 9b00509fede (#5545).
Make sure that you pull the latest commits before you try again! :)

And thanks for trying! :D It's really awesome to have people digging in our devel branches before the release. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hi Dan,

I'm not sure if your emails were sent a while ago and somehow caught up in Google's spam filter, but I have just now received 4 posts from you on this thread - so if they came earlier, I apologize for not responding.

As always, our software is released under a GNU Affero GPL 3 license - that is to say, the code is freely available for all to inspect, download, use, modify, and distribute. You can find our code in the AtoM Github repository: https://github.com/artefactual/atom

Our goal is that by the end of today (we're in Pacific time), we will be unveiling the public launch of our 2.0.0 release - you can watch the User Forum for a post announcing this, or if you are on Twitter, follow @accesstomemory for news.

With the 2.0.0, we are also undertaking a comprehensive rebranding and review of all our resources. Going forward, the 2.x branch will be known only as AtoM, while ICA-AtoM will continue to refer to our 1.x branch. We are preparing a final 1.4 release for ICA-AtoM, completing the work as we are able in our spare time, to be able to leave ICA-AtoM users with a strong, stable release if they do not choose to upgrade to 2.0.0, but because it is unsponsored work, the release date for 1.4 is currently unscheduled. While there may be minor bug fixes and maintenance releases on the 1.x branch after that, all future development efforts will be going into our 2.x branch. Consequently, we urge everyone to consider upgrading to 2.0.0! We're excited about the direction AtoM is heading, and 2.0.0, as a major platform changing-release (we've moved our search engine to Elasticsearch, which allows for much greater scalability and a number of enhanced features such as faceted search), represents just the starting point of where we hope to take AtoM in the coming months and years.

We are also in the process of completely rewriting our documentation at the moment - this will be the best place to find out general information about AtoM 2.0. The new documentation will not be entirely complete at the time of launch (it's a HUGE project, and again, one that is unsponsored, so we are doing it for free as we are able), but we've been focusing first on documenting the parts of the application that are most changed - for any missing sections at the time of launch, we will be referring users to the old ICA-AtoM User Manual as the functionality of these sections will be largely the same. We will continue to work on improving our documentation, and preparing a brand new website for AtoM, after the launch.

So: expect 2.0.0 to be publicly available by tomorrow, with a new (IN PROGRESS) website, new (IN PROGRESS) documentation to help orient users. All of these will be available freely to our community users.

If you are interested in having Artefactual (lead developers of AtoM) host an AtoM instance for you, or customize it, or assist you with legacy data import, we offer a variety of paid support services for AtoM and Archivematica, our digital preservation solution. For more information about the services we offer, see our website: http://www.artefactual.com/. If you are interested in discussing these services further, please feel free to contact us off-list at in...@artefactual.com
