Hi All!

It's been a while since I had to ask for help, but I'm back!

I've finished beta testing my big app and started the transition to production.  Everything went fine and the production version was working till I was asked to add another model  :-(   (Almost a year of beta testing and they only come up with it after moving to production  :-D    )

I successfully implemented and tested the new code in development mode, but when I tried to migrate the db, I started getting errors I have never seen before:

First, using rake db:migrate it complained that I was using version 0.9.2 and the gemfile says 0.8.7 (NOT!  The gemfile says nothing about rake or its versions).  I don't remember doing anything that should have updated rake.

It recommended performing a bundle upgrade to get rake 0.9.2 -- I did it, no problem making the upgrade itself.

Unfortunately, after the upgrade, both rake db:migrate (rake is using 0.9.2) and hobo g migration (it says its using rake 0.8.7) produce errors in the form of:

uninitialized constant WillPaginate::Finders (NameError)

bundle update shows:   Using will_paginate (3.0.0)

The error is occurring in both production and development modes so I'm stuck - I can't do anything new (my next big task was to copy the old website data into the new website) this might require db changes (I tried to avoid this, but there is just too much difference between the sites).

Searching the web shows similar errors with WillPaginate (none with Finders) dating back to 2007, but nothing that helped me.

I tried (this may be totally wrong, it's the hacker in me) editing the Gemfile:

gem "hobo", ">= 1.3.0.RC2"  #RC2 was pre31

but the bundle update still shows 1.3.0.pre31.  I have the feeling that this is not going to solve the WillPaginate problem anyway, but I had to try.

I need to get the WillPaginate thing fixed so that I can get my production db to match the code -- fortunately the users haven't transitioned from the old site yet.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Don Z.

P.S.  Is there a simple (recipe) way to update to the latest version of Hobo, since my ill-fated attempt at editing the Gemfile did nothing?  I don't need to do this except that I don't want to get too far behind.

Try deleting your Gemfile.lock - every time I've had Bundler doing cranky stuff to me, clearing out that file seems to help.

Thanks, Matt.

Well, I tried that but had no luck. It doesn't appear to be a bundler
error.

The error occurs in

/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.3.0.pre31/lib/hobo/model.rb:61:in `patch_will_paginate'. Perhaps I should figure out (help anyone?) how to update hobo from 1.3.0.pre31 to .RC2. Does anyone know if this might solve the problem?

On the other hand, it appears that the 3.0.0 version of WillPaginate is
new this month, so my other option is to try to downgrade to version 2.3
(which appears to be the most recent prior version from their website)
if I can figure out how to do that :-( .

Hi Donald,

you should uninstall hobo_support, hobo_fields, dryml and hobo 1.3.0.pre* from your system

Excuse me for being thick-headed.

Do I use

gem uninstall hobo_support, .... ?

and after I uninstall those modules, then what? :-[

Seriously, I am really not familiar with the techniques needed to update gems, etc.  and right now I don't have the time nor resources to figure them out.

Thanks.

I ran into similar errors with rake 0.9.2, you need to either manually require it or modify some of the rake code.  It's not a hobo error, the rake .9 track broke a lot of rails apps.  Just do a google with the rake error line minus any directory specific stuff and you should find some potential solutions.

Hi Donald,
I saw that the backtrace reports the error in a file of pre31, therefore I deduced that removing it would probably help. Not sure that it will fix it, but having the right gem loaded instead of the wrong one should be a good start however, and in case it wouldn't fix it, it should narrow the problem. As suggested, the version of rake is reported to be a problem too.

And yes, you uninstall the gem with gem uninstal blah...

I had this error and fixed it by downgrading will_paginate from 3.0 to 3.0 RC2. The problem first occurred for me with will_paginate 3.0RC4

Hi,
I also had the problem and made it go away by adding these things to
my Gemfile,

gem "hobo","1.3.0.RC2", :git => "git://github.com/tablatom/
hobo.git", :branch => "rails3"
gem 'rails', '3.0.10'

(also deleted all the pre31 stuff I had with gem uninstall)

I tried to use will_paginate 3.0.0.pre2 but bundle said I needed
>=3.0.0 because hobo wanted it.

Now rake doesnt complain when doing migrations and I havent found
anything else that broke.

Tomas,

I did a fresh install on a virgin Ubuntu 10.4 machine and still had a
few residual problems (never even go to migration).

Putting the gem "hobo","1.3.0.RC2" line in the gemfile made all of the
difference.
The original had ">=1.3.0.RC".

I did notice that bundle install still had a bunch of pre31 versions in
it though.

migrate and rake db:migrate now work as advertised. Thanks!!!!!
