I believe there's an ongoing debate, but at least some people claim the difference between white and foil in terms of heat reflection is negligible. I say go for it if you really want to.

I have the opposite problem: the only polyiso panels available in my area don't have foil coating - they're just primed. I'm trying to decide if I should try taping mylar to them or just give them a solid layer of paint.

White won't make a ton of difference although it won't make a ton of
difference to the glare either - it'll be a bit more diffuse, but all
the energy that isn't entering your yurt has to wind up somewhere!

This brings up an interesting issue.  Using an IR thermometer, I measured 140 degrees on the outside surface in the sun.  Regardless of how much heat was being reflected away, there is still a 40-60 degree difference between outside and inside.  The fact that the inside temperature is tolerable speaks well for the hexayurt design.  However, I have a feeling that screening the outside of the hexayurt with Aluminet or other shade cloth would make a difference in inside temperature.  I haven't run the experiment...

I am wanting to take this further and add color.  Let me know if you have painted and how well the paint sticks.  Did you use housepaint, spray paint?  Is it ridiculous for me to use colored tape?  I've posted this question above as well as I wonder if anyone has diverged from pure function and decorated the yurt exterior (not that silver isn't a beautiful aesthetic on its own).  Julie aka Rubylaser

Haven't painted it yet, but I'm going to try a flat white latex, paint/primer combo paint. Hopefully that will help the paint stick better. I'm not sure it will work though. I've heard that acrylic does an ok job of sticking to panels. I'm going to skip the spray paint though. I think a brush or paint roller would be less messy and easier to control.

Ridiculous...of course not! I would love to see more variations on hexayurt designs. I'm not a tape expert though, I wouldn't know what type of tape to suggest.

I have painted the interior of my yurts for years.  IT IS A VERY EXTENSIVE PROCESS.

You can see some of my photos, here.

Typically the logo on the panels is an oil based logo.  If you paint over it with anything from a hardwards store it will not cover the logo.  Even with primer & three coats of the best stuff they have.

I have ended up wiping the logo off with denatured alcohol or acetone and then painting.

EVEN THEN... the paint sticks to itself in corners & comes off when you set it up.  I am still working on a solution to this.
