Hey everyone!

Did a count of all the Hexayurts on the geoeye satellite photo again this year. you can take a look and read about it all here ::

http://www.flickr.com/photos/thejaymo/7986877363/

I just wanted to quote something i wrote re the 739 yurts - " EVERYONE that has ever built, designed, or contributed their time in anyway to the hexayurt project should feel tremendously proud."

:D

got is message already!

" I SAW an H33!! A vestibule & two rooms! Didn't have a camera. . ."

i asume this must be one of dylan toymaker's 'winged' yurts? - someone was discussing a H33 here :: http://list.hackmanhattan.com/pipermail/blabber/2012-August/004192.html (no pics)

Thanks for this!   There were 2 hexayurts from our camp which aren't marked on the photos as they were under shade structures, so the number goes to at least 741.

Maybe we need to have 'Do you live in a hexayurt' added to next years census?!

Hey! I was counted! :-) It provided us with great shelter this year
and last, as well as for other events. This year I added a solid door
on a spring hinge w magnets, which functioned perfectly.

Thanks to all of you folks, we have had fantastic, cost effective and
trouble free shelter for a few years running! I'm likely retiring my
standard one this year and going to a more serious, tubular steel
mongolian style yurt for future use, as I really want an actually
round structure, but my Hexayurt has served very very well. I have
nothing but praise for the design!

Hi Pete,

Yeah had a brief discussion about the census on twitter the other day. Do you know who we would need to contact to get this added?  - I guess just "Type of Domicile" would do. Although it wouldn't tell us the total number of yurts, it WOULD tell us the number of people who were being provided shelter by them.

Apologies for missing your yurts! I know i have also missed 3 more from a message i got yesterday, so we know its at least 744! have you seen the home made drone flyover video!?

Hi Jaymo,

I think 'type of domicile' and 'number of people staying with you in your domicile' should allow for a estimation of the yurt population in the city.   These questions may already be on the online part of this years census, which is due to come online this friday at http://census.burningman.com.

Probably best to fire off a message to the Burning Nerds list, I'm sure the census organisers can be found on there.

Cheers,

Pete

Re: Suggested Hexiyurts around 2:00 & The Esplanade.

That's Root Society. I was next door in Illumination Village (properly Hexi mapped) NONE of those stars near the Esplanade are domes, they are all teepees.

I can confirm this from first hand knowledge as friends lived in them. No hexi's on THAT site.

I'll be working with the census for 3 days this week doing data entry so I'll mention your interest in having "What's your living environment on Playa?" added.  Remember not everyone fills it out, so you won't get a number, only an estimate of the percentage of people who live in yurts compared to RVs, tents, etc.  and there will be a margin of error.

But it is worth asking.

Thanks so much for doing this.  Our Hextayurt (and all the hexayurts in the French Quarter) were counted!

Here is a picture of the wooden door we bolted onto the inside of our H13.

If you are going to go with non-traditional building materials, why go
heavier than wood (when wood will stand up better, and is probably
easier than tubular steel) when there is carbon fiber, often known as
"kite rod" or "golf tube".

If you have more interest in this, I camp in ger (ger means house, yurt
means village) at many SCA events, including Pennsic (up to 6 16' in
diameter, 6' tall at the walls, interconnected ones there, depending on
the year) and have a 12' one that I take to overnight events at my
house, if you are anywhere near Massachusetts, and want to come by and
poke.

Yes, my ger are over-built, I like to be able to hang hammock chairs
from the center ring ...

Firstly, beautiful documentation and great design, Vladimir. Lovely work!

Secondly, *70s*. Low 70s. All day.

The state of the art has improved. Well impressed.

I got a bit carried away this year and ended up building this:

http://www.appropedia.org/BFD_mod

It solves a bunch of problems people kept mentioning:

  1. it adds a 5+' high door to a standard 7 panel stretch hexayurt design, plenty comfortable for getting in and out even for a 6+' tall person carrying a cooler
  2. it does not require any bdf tape (ideally that is, we had to use some this year to save a bit of time) - it uses cordura hinges between panels, and zippers and velcro to align things - can be set up solo in under 60 minutes. We also used cushion foam and cordura on the bottom edges of wall panels for dustproofing. Hopefully the contact cement will survive the winter and prove this to be a multi-year design. A bit of nikwax waterproofing could make it leak-proof, but we ended up using a monkeyhut shade over the structure (hence we are not on the satellite photo, +1 to the yearly count!)
  3. the external wooden door frame is used as an anchor point for horizontal webbing with ratchets, so that the entire structure is "pre-compressed" and just feels made out a single piece of foam :) - we had absolutely no problems with wind during setup, takedown or the dust storms and the inside walls felt strong enough to lean against.
  4. the tall walls allow placement of a high exhaust vent without a substantial increase in internal volume, so Figjam's swamp cooler had absolutely no trouble keeping inside at low 70s throughout the day

It took quite a bit of homework of course, but that seemed totally worth it during Thursday night dust storm :)

I want to thank you, guys, for the inspiration, and I hope some of these ideas would help improve your next structure,

Vladimir
