Dear members and friends of HackerspaceSG,

Thank you for your generous support so far.

Our current lease at 70A Bussorah Street is coming to an end in less than a month’s time. Over the years, the rent has increased steadily from about $3500 to the current $4333.50. The present landlord is also unwilling to extend the lease at the current rate past February 2014, and intends instead to separate our combined 2nd floor unit into two units (separating the zone library into a second unit) over the next two months.

During the time that the zone and library are carved out into a separate unit, we are still allowed to stay in the main area plus lab. But expect dust, noise and other inconveniences.

Apart from the inconvenience and cost of paying rent for half unusable space, it is unlikely that the two adjoining units will be leased back to us at the same rate once renovation is complete.

As such, our only logical option is to move out by the end of the current lease, which is 14 November. Assuming that we don’t find, sign a lease on, and move into a new space before then, the plan is to do the following:
  • Find sufficient temporary accommodation in a single location for the members who use the space on a daily basis. A strong option for this is JFDI’s café, alternatives closer to Arab St are worth seeking.
  • Place our substantial collection of stuff into storage somewhere.

We need a lot of help, first to move to storage and then to find us a new place. We will be gathering at the space Tuesday next week at 8pm to plan our next steps. Our intention is to complete our move by the 10th, and then have an empty-space farewell followed by a cleanup. If you’d like to chip in to help with the move, please join us then.

Thank you once again for your continued support.

Sad news indeed. Sadder still that we only know less than 3 weeks before the big move. Oh well… all good things must come to an end.

I won’t be available cos i have the PHP Meetup to run. But keep me posted.

Are there better sites that the hilariously bad
http://www.commercialguru.com.sg/ for searching for office space?

Or does anyone know a good agent?

Obviously I would prefer to move to a new place, instead of moving to
storage, though I understand we are short of time.

Worried that if we cancel M1 fibre, will it be straightforward to get
the same deal again?

Spread the word. Ask around. Keep you eye out for something suitable.

Luther is there a list of places you've already seen somewhere?

I have some new double ply boxes I can donate, and will try to make time to help with the move, but I am just started looking for a new job and that takes priority for me.

Out of curiosity, how much are you guys paying a month for M1 fibre? I can pull some strings and get MyRepublic for you guys, depending on what are your needs.

I have a favourable impression of Viewqwest. This could be a good opportunity to shop around for a good deal anyway.

Library books: Your help needed.

Hi chaps, for those of u who took some books home for "safe keeping," can i ask you to do the following;
1. goto hackerspace.sg
2. readme -> library book lending log
3. key in whatever books you have taken home as a reminder to yourself to bring it back when we are in the new location.

Terence(?) do you have a contact for vault dragon? i need to ask them for a quote for how much it is to put whatever balance in storage. Thanks v much in adv!

Hi chaps,

here's an update. 1st of all, meng (mike knows him much better than i) came in today & took out a whole lot of books. i think there are too many to key into the borrowing list. At any rate, that's his personal property, so no harm in him borrowing back his personal property right? ;)

meng also took back the table lamps which i understand from mike are his personal property which he loaned to hacker space over all this time. thank you meng for your kind support all these years & thanks for taking the time to take it back. i do understand that this is not the best day to be coming to hackerspace tp move stuff & you'd rather be doing something more constructive today!

Today i also walked past the back lane of 1 of the flower shops & asked the shopkeeper if i could have some of the empty boxes outside his shop. he was very willing to give them to me. In fact, when i passed by his shop later today, he gave me a few more. They are now in the back of the lab. Help yr self 2 it. i'll try 2 get some more on an opportunistic basis, but don't hold your breath waiting for it.

thanks very much again to meng et al & cheers!

No no, thank you for tying all the books up into bundles … that made it a lot easier!

I will photograph the books I took. They are mostly mine but I may have inadvertently mixed in a handful of other people's books so I do want to put up a record.

I can also take the silverware and wine glasses and hot water Zojirushi, after the Last Supper…

I also took an Xbox 360 with 1 wired and 1 wireless controller. I suspect it is mine but am not sure. All I know is that the one I bought a couple years ago is missing so I made a bold assumption. I figured the universe owes me one… but if it's yours let me know and I'll return it.

After I finish Arkham City, naturally.

I think it is all on the website, vaultdragon.com. Let's just sign up like any other customer – I'd like to know how they perform on an arms-length, "mystery shopper" basis.

hi meng et al,

nonetheless, i can c that u took time & effort to make a special trip to come up here today, so kudos for that! As for tying up the books in knots, it's pretty therapeutic after the 10th bundle & it really has to be done! Don't worry about taking home books that don't belong 2 u. i took home lots of books & none of them belong to me ;) Don't worry if you've taken books that are not yours; by returning it to the "other place" we're indirectly using your house as a storage space ;) so don't trouble yourself with taking photos, it's an honour system!

As for the silverware & wine glasses, personally i only use the glass tumblers, wine glasses are too difficult to wash & they're "accident prone." So the sooner u take them out of here, you're really doing this place a favour! As of tonight, we only have 8 more days here anyway.

If you're missing any hardware like an xbox, i strongly suggest you try to search & reassemble it now. If any parts are missing, at least u know it's somewhere in bassorah street.

Vault dragon is what i got from CJ. Apparently we frequently use their services. I've sent them an email & will probably call them on monday to come give us a quotation. Dono if they wil move the stuff for us to the storage space, but lets c. Thanx 4 the contact!
