Just been chatting to M1. They say for ADSL, we need to get a 24 month
Singtel contract which costs IIUC at least 220SGD.

It will take at least a week to install.

I'm not sure it's worth it...

Wonder if there are any other SG Singapore options I might have
missed. I'm going other to KGB now to see if there is are friendly
wifi APs within reach.

I've asked our new neighbour GO SUSHI if they are willing to share the
connection for 40 working days.

They'll get back to me if they agree.

Anyway have a wireless AP that's capable of throttling itself to a
certain speed? i.e. so that we don't overload their ADSL connection?

Kind regards,

There is an open AP atm in the building, which is better than our
previous connection (!)

What luck. ;) Wonder how long that will last.

When is the previous contract due. If its already over might as well sign a new one.

Don't need to pay for transfer fee and installation is free.

I'm looking into alternatives with http://www.viewqwest.com/ (VQ) for example.

M1 is threatening us with a 800SGD charge. I'm trying to get a
straight answer from them, except their sales guy is giving me the run
around. :(

GO SUSHI's IT guy says it's a "security concern" to share Internet. So
that avenue is closed down.

I haven't summoned the courage yet to speak to our neighbours
upstairs, but they look like an old school firm with similar
reservations.

Right now I'm still on the very decent open AP. No idea how long this will last.

Hoping to put the OpenNET order in today... waiting for final offers
from M1 & VQ.

Buy a prepaid card with data plan and top it up with credits for 1 month until fibre comes in?

Are you talking about 3G?

I think we need to BYOI for 40 days (time until OpenNET is installed).
I don't mind sharing my 4G connection at times. There might be local
wifi options too. Sucks, I know.

The ADSL option requires installation (1 week at least) and 24 month
contract. It's still on the table, but I need to sort out who is our
ISP going into the future.

Prepaid data won't be feasible. There's a "fair use" cap of 2GB daily for StarHub LTE. SingTel and M1 only offer plans with access speeds of up to 7.2Mbps.

However, I would second the suggestion of getting a short-term contract and LTE router as a stopgap solution while we get a fixed line set up.

StarHub:
Cost: $94.20/month (may have rolling contracts; unsure about contract length) + acquisition of an LTE router

M1:
Cost: $128.16/month (6 month contract) + acquisition of an LTE router

SingTel has a data usage bill cap of $188 so I don't think it's worth venturing there.

Seems like we are going with M1 again on Monday. I recalled that when we started with them they provided complimentary ADSL before fibre was up. We will check if this is possible.

In the interim, perhaps an M1 prepaid unlimited data plan costing $18 for 5 days is a temporary solution. We can see how much mileage that gives even though it is only 7.2Mbps. IMHO, it is better than zero internet. So quit the torrenting and youtubing :)

I have an TP-Link 3G router and a Starhub mobile broadband usb stick. If that works great. Otherwise I probably will need a M1 USB stick

I think Kai mentioned somewhere offline that M1 offered two data SIM cards in the interim…?

Randomly, my iPhone 5 on M1 doesn't like KGB very much since I was only able to receive a GPRS signal there. Mike doesn't seem to have a problem with his iPad mini on M1 though. Hope mine's an isolated case.

Might be an M1 issue. I'm on M1 as well, and seeing the same thing. HSDPA comes
on if I shift all the way to the back.

I noticed mobile reception is patchy in the middle of the space. :/

Though a mifi we can hopefully put them in a strategic location.
Anyone have a mifi to lend the space? Hoping to arrange SIM cards from
M1 tomorrow.

I'm thinking that we could position a 3G dongle hooked up to Luther's 3G router
at the back where there's good reception, and then drag ethernet cables over the
ceiling to the Airport Extreme.

The latest news from our M1 account manager is that "All the mifi
devices are out for loan. I am not sure when it will be back."

Does anyone have a mifi to lend the space? Maybe an old Android phone?

We would need to ideally connect it to the Airport base station. Maybe
via Rpi and a USB dongle?

Luther mentioned he has a 3G router available, which if I'm not mistaken, is the
TL-WR1043ND (typical 4-port router with WAN ethernet port and USB port). It
would probably do a much better job when equipped with the USB dongle than the
Rpi.

Didn’t you mention that M1 will give us 2 LTE SIM Cards temporarily? If so, let’s configure them.

If you are short on valuable time, perhaps leave the heavy thinking to Luther and me to figure it out tonight.

http://makespace.sg/ might be able to lend us some of their interwebs,
but getting to their unit is pretty tricky. Too far for ethernet and
wifi line of sight(LOS) is obscured somewhat.

If anyone has some good wifi equipment to lend us, like at a minimum a
1043ND, that would be nice. I've tried contacting Ondelo, I wonder
what they can suggest.

The roof is quite fun http://www.flickr.com/photos/hendry/10956755375/
btw. Accessible from fire exit. You can't realistically run cables up
there.

Actually Jacob is much closer, though he only has 5Mbps ADSL to share.
Better than nothing.

Fazli is looking for his ~100m cable tonight and hopefully we can
swing it down one and across two, to Jacob's window from the back.

We are cabled to Jacob's office!

We tested the cable. It should be fine.

What's left to do, is for Jacob to run the cable he's collected over
the ceiling and patch it into his ADSL network. This will happen later
TONIGHT.

It worked then it stopped, surprisingly, it was the the lowest denominator, cable fault!!

After some battlefield surgery, interim internet is back up.
Depending on whether trolls sabotage the cables again, the current setup should be good for a while.

Nothing is easy for some reason
