What is Stornello ownership like? I have a line on a regolarita model
that needs a little love, but I think it would be a great little "town"
bike, even for my "large boned" body.

Any thoughts?

A true Stornello regolarite is quite rear and could bring some money. There are a lot of scramblers around that people call regolarite but are not the true thing. Ether way they should make for a good ride for a big fella with the lower gearing. By all means go for it and if you don't like it I'm sure someone on the list would take it off your hands. Do make sure you know what you are getting and pay accordingly.

I have owned my Stornello for about 6 months, and I have put about 75 miles on it around here locally. I have to say I really like this little bike. It is not long on power, but it gets around alright. And it is capable of at least going the speed limit. The 6 volt lighting means I try to limit riding at dusk or after dark, but otherwise I really have fun on it. It gets awesome mileage, and attracts a crowd any time I park it. For a $750 motorcycle, I would say it is a lot of bang for the buck.

But, I like weird Italian crap. That is why I am subscribed to this group. Which makes my opinion (or anybody else's here) suspect!

So, I would recommend that you by that Stornello right away. In fact, today would be good. Or maybe tomorrow, since today is Christmas!

I have the ISDT model from what I can tell they only brought in 100 of them into the states.  might want to sell it if anyone wants it as I do not have time to restore it.  Or if there is any good restorers out there maybe we can make a deal.

You might want to talk to Mark Etheridge at Moto Guzzi Classics in the LBC.  He was always very fair with me.  If I get one, I will do my own paint and I would consider painting yours if you don't have a good local source (but its LA!)

Interesting, I didn't realize they only imported that few.  My wife's uncle bought the one I have new and I wound up with it a couple of years ago.  Someone on the group sent me the specs when I was working on the carb, and that's when I realized there was a scrambler and a separate ISDT model.  Special model or not, it still has that hefty 45mph cruise speed! (using the gps since there is no speedo). On the other hand, it still runs unrestored after all these years and gets about 80mpg.

I believe the Stornello Turismo was introduced in 1960, The sport model was introduced in 1961 so it must be later than 1957.  The Turismo has a different head and valve arrangement, the front mudguard is fixed to the underside of the top yoke.  On the sport it is fixed to the lower fork leg.  It also has Borranni ali rims so no rot to worry about.

Wiring is very simple, only about 15 wires on the whole bike. You can get a wiring diagram as a free download from the site above or Scrambler cycle or Guzzitek.  A bit of time on the net will find you plenty of info about them

Wouldn't like to comment on value but $500 don't sound bad, mine cost £150 but was a real wreck.  The damage on the left side of the barrel on yours is unfortunate and could involve rebuilding with weld or a new barrel

Your's has got the Sport engine, the head is different shape.

There is also a Sport America model, different paint job and most I have seen have higher bars.

As for year, I would guess 61 to 68.  Yours is probably the Sport America

Geeze we shut down for a week and a Stornello thread breaks out.

That looks like a Sport. It should have San Remo rims afaik. The difference I know between a Sport and the “Touring” model is the alloy San Remo rims. I think the Sport came with lower bars too.

I thought they all shared the same engine but the ISDT model has the highest output. Larger carb, higher compression and probably a freer flowing exhaust.

The give-aways are a high pipe with a classic trials style muffler, smaller front brake and QD rear wheel. The QD wheel is probably the sure clue as the other things can be swapped out pretty easily. I think the ISDT had a skid plate that was exclusive to it and it had a smaller headlamp with a wire stone guard. Shorter seat and a high front fender as well. The tank is a little differently shaped too I think.

I have one that I converted to trials configuration. Slow but pretty torquey. It has a tough time competing with the Triumph Cubs that seem to dominate the Premier Lightweight trials classes.

 For some reason, my browser is not letting me view Danilo's pics. But if it is like the last photo that Don posted, I think he is right about date and model. My Stornello started as a 67 Scrambler, which frankly had the ugliest front fender I have ever seen. After a few months of searching, I was able to locate a Sport fender and header with a non original muffler to make the Sport conversion. I also installed some lower butterfly bars and made shorter control cables. Took it out for a spin yesterday and took these pictures. Funny how this goofy little bike makes me smile!

Gotta get a sport seat and clipons though.  Will paint it Boyd Coddington red, and use the highly stylized gambalunga Guzzi Eagles instead of the traditional ones.  They're just perfect for that tank.

If you find a source for the early style "clip-ons", as in the bars that mount under the fork top bolts like the earlier style Sport, please let me know. I hafd no luck on these, and obviously with fork shourd/headlight ears, standard clip-ons are out. I ended up using a set of Guzzino's small euro bars to get the low bar Sport effect, but would love to do the early Sport style clip-ons.

BTW, somebody just listed a set of the correct Sport 125 decals on Ebay. I am not going to restore my bike, as I love the patina. But if you are doing a full resto, you might want to check them out.

In case you can't find one in the states.  I am experimenting with rims from a kids motor x bike, 1 x 1.40 (should be 1.60) Still accepts a 2.75 width tyre.  The problem is the rim is drilled for a smaller hub centre and needs the spoke nipple seats reshaping to suit the larger diameter hub or you end up with curved spokes.

In my experience, nothing on the market will work on chrome as well as One Grand's Chrome Polish. There is some sort of acid in it that eats rust right off chrome like magic. Over the years I have seved customers thousands of dollars of re-chroming by using this stuff.  If that exhaust can be saved, this is the stuff that will do it.

I took down the Serial numbers --  T 73 GP   Then "CM2273CM" below it.

I looked at the Guzzi NL site, and that shows it as a Sport -- Dunno how to deduce the year.  I'm almost convinced this is a pretty bone-stock Sport America because of the steel front wheel and the bars.  Tank was originally red, and I suspect the fenders were silver, a-la V700 scheme? 

That would make it a '65?

If I were to get an original seat cover to the model instead of the bum-stop style, whet re might I look?

I would say 65 is about right.  Mine is 65 Turismo model, numbers N35LH.  Engine and frame numbers should match.

I have seen pictures of one in red and silver:-

As for the seat cover, any good upholsterers should be able to make you one from vinyl.  I reckon this one has a steel seat base and foam, whereas the Stornello is normally a frame with springs, horse hair and leather cover!
