Rain gutters are a crucial part of the roof system which collects and diverts rainwater shed by the roof. Can you imagine what is going to happen if the water is not being directed away from your home? This will lead to the damage of the wood, brick mortar, eroding the foundation and flooding of the basements. Hence, it is very important to keep up with gutter cleaning and gutter repairs to protect your home from such disasters.

Water can be the real enemy when it comes to rain gutters. It is usually recommended to clean your gutters semi-annually to keep them in their optimal working condition. By having the rain gutters checked and cleaned in a periodic manner, broken or damaged parts could be detected early. These broken and damaged parts can be the difference between your gutter system working or not working. Even clean gutters that have been damaged or broken in some way will not work properly. Having minor repairs addressed during your routine gutter cleaning visits is the best way to extend the life of your gutters.

So what types of gutter repairs are typically needed? There are a number of repairs that could be needed, but there are some gutter repairs that are very common.

Sagging gutters are the most common type of gutter repair. The reason being that a lot of old gutters are supported by long nails or spikes. The only way to repair these sagging gutters is to replace the spikes with long screws or to add new brackets. There is the possibility that the wood surrounding the sagging, leaking gutter has been damaged. In this event the wood would need to be replaced too.

Another common gutter repair is the downspouts. The downspouts carry all of the excess water down and away from the house. If debris gets stuck and freezes inside the downspouts the seam of the downspout can split. The downspout and elbow will have to be replaced, and possibly the bracket that supports the downspout. The bracket will need to be reattached back to its original position where it came loose.
