Another common issue connecting to your house’s structure and poorly maintained rain gutters occurs during the cold winter season. Your home’s foundation is made of concrete. Concrete is a perfect structure product for numerous factors, however it does have one fault. That fault is that it will develop fractures over time.

While this is a problem, it is generally a small one considering that the cracks that develop are typically small enough to not pose a significant issue. However, if you have a lot of water that enters those fractures, and the temperature drops below freezing, then the expanding ice can cause those little cracks to break open resulting in major damage to your house’s foundation. This, naturally, can be very expensive to fix, which is why it’s a problem best

After any seasonal change, it's a good idea to clean out your gutters. You should also do it especially after fall because of the large amount of leaves and debris that gather there during autumn. Cleaning out your gutters may be a bit of a messy job, but it is relatively easy to do yourself. Follow these few steps and the process will be done in no time.

First, find, make, or buy yourself a handy scooper. Something as simple as making a scooper out of a plastic jug with a handle will do, or you can also use a trowel or garden spade-even an old kitchen spatula will work. Once you've got all debris cleaned out, then next step is to clear out the downspouts.

A downspout is the rain gutter that collects water runoff from the roof; these must be cleared before your rinse out the gutters. To check for flow, put a hose into the downspout; if water doesn't run out, then it is clogged. To unclog the downspout, first pack the opening around the hose with a rag sealing the hose tight. Then turn the water pressure on as hard as it will go, watching for any flow. If this doesn't work, you'll have to manually clean out the clog with a plumbing snake.

Once everything is cleared out, the next step is to rinse the gutter and downspout system and flush it out. This is done with a hose supplying water at the farthest gutter section from the downspout opening. As soon as this section is clear, you can move on to the next gutter section and repeat the entire process. Once you get the hang of it, your gutters will be cleaned and free of debris in no time.
