Extremely disappointed that growl now costs money. Growl, in my
opinion, is a great add-on, but nowhere near the realm of being paid
for, ESPECIALLY when it has been free this whole time.

I began getting annoying notifications repeatedly to update growl to
the paid version, so I'd rather uninstall than to adhere to a paid-for
upgrade.

Thanks, Growl dev team. It was great to have the feature as an add-
on, but I am saddened by the changes. Wish you the best with whatever
group you find yourself catering to.

So, you don't think that the hard work of these developers is worth $1.99?

What a joke these people complaining about paying so little money to
reward those who have been dedicating their time to enrich our Mac
user experience for so long.
Thanks to the developers :-)

I can add : "It's a real shame to whine about a product that has cost so much to the
developers!" So stop whining about the price and pay or shut your mouth, little kids,
and stop using it !

That's not very constructive.  I'm sure everyone would agree that 1.3.x is currently less functional than 1.2.x and that it could have done with an extra round of user testing before being released.  Add to the mix that people are now expected to pay for it, and you can understand their frustration.

At least one person has been banned from this group for being abusive - I hope the moderators encourage you to tone down your responses in the same vein.

People pointing out issues should be encouraged, not stamped on.

Guys this thread is just annoying all around, and Phat Bob's email has just topped it. There is nothing beneficial that can come out of this thread except for angry people on both sides of it.

Here are the facts regarding the original post, they are not going to change:

1) Growl in binary form as of 1.3 and higher are no longer free to download, you will need to purchase Growl in order to download the binary.

2) Growl is open source and you can build Growl from source if you would like to.

3) Some people will appreciate and do like the fact that we are charging for Growl in order to make Growl a sustainable project, and some people do not. That's life.

4) The fact that Phat Bob doesn't think that we tested enough would not have changed if we had tested for a year longer. Phat Bob's problem will not be satisfied until the applications he uses update. No amount of our pleading would have gotten all of them to update. No amount of our testing would have changed it. That's the bottom line.

That's it, that's not going to change. It's how it is, we just have to move on from here.

I consider this thread dead at this point, there's no need to continue it. There's no value in doing so as far as I can see, other than to try to start a fight on an email list. People have their opinions, you have your own. You can feel free to express yours, but both starting arguments on this list and directing people down the path you know is incorrect are not acceptable behavior.
