Sorry guys, not paying to update something that was installed without
my permission. I just have to figure out how to keep this thing off my
machine.

Why Open the Web?

Despite the connecting purpose of the Web, it is not entirely open to all of
its users. When used correctly, HTML documents can be displayed across
platforms and devices. However, many devices are excluded access to Web
content.

I just wish I could disable the upgrade notification, and stay with my
current version for now. One of my apps installed Growl (with my
permission), but I am not prepared to buy the app right now... sigh! I
hope it resolves itself whenever I upgrade whichever app it was...

You can disable it.  Go to the "About" tab of the preferences panel.  Uncheck the box at the bottom.
