I point out that Growl (version 1.4, but already existed in the previous version 1.3.?) Does not start at boot Mac contrary to what the control panel says (the little button that "slides").
Perhaps this is a bug in the French version, or because I asked what Growl does not appear in the menu bar, or in the Dock.
In any case, at every restart, I obbligé launch the application manually, because if I add in the list of applications to launch in the control panel "Users and Groups" Growl starts well, but he retired alone in this list. Annoying.

Growl 1.4 uses the only known approved method for starting at login
under sandboxing, using a helper which launches the main app. This
helper will not appear in your user's login items in System
Preferences as it is managed by launchd. The best way to look and see
if it is registering correctly with launchd is to run this command in
Terminal.app:
launchctl list | grep growl
If when the switch is on, you see com.growl.GrowlLauncher listed, it
is working correctly,
If when the switch is on, you dont see it, there is something that has
gone wrong. launchd is a great tool, but it can be buggy as all get
out at times. The basic troubleshooting steps of repairing
permissions with Disk Utility, and repairing the launchd database (You
can use the command line, or a utility such as Cocktail to do so)
sometimes bring positive results.

I have the same problem.

I have the same problem. The terminal command below gives the output which suggests it is working - "- 0 com.growl.GrowlLauncher" is displayed - but on startup Growl is not running.

Any other suggestions or more information which might help fix this?

Many thanks.

" they can't detect Growl and choose the built-in notifications. In case of Skype"  Skype posted an update today, I have seen that w/ the Skype " choose the built-in notifications"

I'm having the same problem, and it's pretty annoying! I think this might be a bug on Apple's end. I'm having the same problem with the 1Password helper app. They told me this should only happen when automatic login is enabled, and it's a bug on Apple's side, they are trying to work with them.

Please Growl, step in, this is definitely affecting a number of users, and it's bad. When my apps like Echofon for Twitter, Adium, Skype etc. all start up because of automatic relaunching, they can't detect Growl and choose the built-in notifications. In case of Skype, I have to switch back to Growl 1.4 manually.

We definitely do know about it. And it does seem to be the same problem that 1password ran into.

Skype was just an example, it's a fact that Growl is not launching when the Mac boots, no matter what the settings are. All applications using Growl are affected. Like I said, it's affection the 1Password helper as well, it might be a serious Mac OS bug.. but Growl devs should know.

For what it's worth… if you turn OFF the built-in preference to launch Growl, you can make your own "launch at login" using launchd:

This will keep Growl running and (should) restart it if it crashes.

If you want to quit Growl, you can do so in the usual manner. Growl will not re-launch after a manual exit until you launch it, or until you login again.

This worked for me. I don't have automatic login enabled, but I do use FileVault 2 on Lion.

ps - I made the plist (which is what the gist is) using Lingon 3

which is, IMO, well worth $3 if you use launchd, like, ever. :-)

pps - I sent this before but I think it was from the "wrong" account. Apologies if it shows up twice.

Well, I don't use automatic login, but growl doesn't start at login anymore. Perhaps there's more to it than that, or perhaps I have a similar but different issue. Looking forward to a fix.
