How do I check it?

I tried to create two files with same name but different character
cases and finder didn't let me do it.

Do a Get Info on the drive volume, check the format. Eg. mine
says Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). If yours
doesn't say case-sensitive then it's not.

No help?

I really need to see the application list in growl so I can stop them
from appearing all the time.

Can you try Growl 1.3.3, it should be available in the app store now
We put in a possible fix for this, but never got any good confirmation
one way or the other whether it fixed it or not (other issues that it
did fix though had to go through).

As another thing to try, try moving the com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp.plist
and com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp.plist.lockfile aside (or delete them) in
your ~/Library/Preferences folder (~/Library is hidden by default on
Lion, you can get there from the Go menu in finder when you hold down
alt).

I did what you said.
Removed growl and reinstalled through app store.
it didn't work
quit growl, removed the two files you mentioned
nothing.

I still can't see the application list.

seriously, I was using growl ok and then I thought after coming to
Lion "let me pay for this because they deserve it"
and now it stopped working
I look at it and its doing a troll face at me =/

So, not sure what else to try to fix the actual problem right now,
1.3.3 try's to force the toolbar to be visible. To get to the
applications tab, there is a manual workaround. Quit growl, open
com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp.plist and find the key GrowlSelectedPrefPane,
and change its value to 1. The prefpane tabs are 0 indexed, with 0
being General, and About being 5 (in 1.3.x).

I realize this doesn't fix the problem, and we are going to keep
looking for a fix.

Yeah I broke mine as well. See my post on it if it got through. this is not making me happy. I'm a blind user who cannot see the notifications so I need them to speak and they don't.

Take care all.

Weird.
When I preview the plist file, I can see the xml being rendered, but
when I open it, it is all messed up.

take a look at the plist file

Thats a binary plist, Apple has a plugin that is rendering it as xml
in quicklook. I believe that that is the default storage method for
preference files dating back quite awhile, and not something that we
explicitly do. There are a few ways of dealing with it, one is to use
Apple's PList editor, part of the XCode toolset, if you dont want to
download all that is XCode, there are a number of third party apps
that should edit it just fine, last is to use the command line tool
defaults.

It didn't work.
I used prefsetter to set it and it didn't show the applications tab on
relaunch

another weird thing is that I set the growl position to be the bottom
right one but it doesn't save it
I quit the growl app using activity monitor and once I relaunch, it is
still selecting the default position, which is top right

I really need help here
all those skype msgs are killing me.

I have the same thing with 1.3.3 on 10.7.2 with a case-sensitive FS.

Hi all,

I think the case sensitive filesystem doesnt matter, the problem is a unclean volume, w/ errors.

In my case, booting holding CMD + R, and launch disk utility, then check & repair entire filesystem(s), fix permissions. Uninstall Growl by using some good uninstall tool (cleanMyMac), then reinstall Growl, it will work :-)

It works for me!

Hi there,

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. I've deleted Growl, and all related files, each time and then done a reinstall. Verified/repaired permissions, etc. (using Onyx).  It works for a moment, but when the computer goes to sleep or I reboot, it doesn't give me the preference window so I can't change the skin. I'm on a MacBook Air, running 10.7.4 (the problem seems to have cropped up after my latest software update).

Hope to get it sorted soon. Quite a fan of Growl.

Thx.

This issue still remains. I managed to duplicate it many times by simply trying to install a few new themes.
The first thing that goes wrong is the Dialog Box asking if I want to overwrite an existing theme or the other box asking if I want to configure the new theme. In these two boxes the Growl Icon/Logo is upside down.

Then whenever I try to get to the settings, I get the problem you guys already mentioned. OK, deleting the plists and/or uninstalling-reinstalling does solve the problem, but only temporarily.

I've reinstalled Growl and have used only one of the default themes and it seems stable so far.  I got those same issues when I tried to install a custom theme.

Growl 1.4 (in review) has some additional attempts to force the
toolbar to be visible, and have items in it. Worst case scenario if
that doesn't fix it, it also adds the growl:// url scheme, which will
let you open preferences to a specific tab using growl://preferences/<pref
tab> Where <pref tab> is one of the following: general, applications,
displays, network, rollup, history, about.

If plugin installation is the problem (or part of it), we would
appreciate help in narrowing down what styles are doing it, if it is a
specific style, so we can study what is happening (if its still
happening post 1.4).
