That's because those messages are only emitted when Growl starts, not when it receives a notification.
Check in the Activity Monitor. Is GrowlHelperApp running? (Use the search field; don't try to look for it yourself.)
1.2.2 seems to work for me on 10.7. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to work for some people, but not for everyone as you have seen.
Is there anything showing up in the console log?

Forgive my delay in responding; it's taken this long for Growl to exhibit the same behavior.Yes, Growl Helper App is still running. Restarting Growl caused another such process to be spawned, however. If it's any help to you, I've sampled the other process and can post it here or forward elsewhere.
