Hi everyone.

First of all, praise. I love growl and I've been using it since 2005.

Now, the bug.

I recently updated to 1.2.2. Before 1.2.2 growl was working normally.
Since the moment I updated to 1.2.2 I get nothing, no notifications
and not even previews work. I installed the Mono style from
Christopher Lobay (http://christopherlobay.com/) after updating to
1.2.2.

A couple of days after giving up on fixing Growl I noticed that
previews showed up randomly, usually several hours or days after
pressing the "Preview" button. I discovered this behavior while doing
a Spotlight search.

I'm on Lion. There are several apps registered with my growl
installation:

1Password, Adium, Blizzard Updater, BoxSyncHelper, Camino, Curse
Client, CxEx Central, Dropbox, Evernote, Firefox, a couple of Web Apps
I made with Fluid, Handbrake, iStumbler, JDownloader, KisMAC,
libprs500 (idk wtf that is), LittleIpsum, Mumble, NetNewsWire,
Parallels Desktop, Plex Media Server, Popcorn, Rapidweaver, Skype,
Starcraft 2, Stuffit Expander, Techtool Pro 5, The Cider X Porter, The
CxEx Porter, Toast Titanium, Tracks, Transmission, Tweetie, Twitter,
Vienna, World of Warcraft Public Test and Wrath of the Lich King.

BTW, I can't find anything on the console logs.

Cheers.

Can you send in a screenshot of the general tab of Growl preferences?

I'm seeing the exact same behavior after upgrading to Lion.
Notifications sometimes work, sometimes don't. Previews don't work
unless I completely kill and restart Growl, then they work until I
close the System Preferences, then they stop working again. I
sometimes get sound notifications at random long after a notification
should have appeared, or maybe even did appear.

Something is definitely odd with Growl and Lion.

I'm also experiencing the same problem. After upgrading to Lion, it
appears that Growl is intermittent. It will work for a while then stop
working. Also, I'll get sounds from notifications at what seems like
random times, or maybe when the notification is supposed to be
appearing, but I cannot see it.

Also, the Preview does not work unless I completely kill Growl and
restart it (i.e. clicking Stop Growl does not actually stop the
daemon, I have to manually "kill" it from a Terminal window). After a
fresh start, the Preview works until I leave the System Preferences.
In addition, notifications start working for some time, then randomly
stop.

I solved it.

Uninstalled Growl manually (uninstaller in Lion wouldn't work for me)
by copying from Applescript script inside uninstaller.
Reinstalled 1.2.2 from stable version per http://growl.info
Everything seems normal once again.

Cheers,

Ditto. I've found that stopping and starting Growl again does not restore functionality. However, choosing "Restart Growl" from the menu extra does give me my notifications back -- for a while. And, like Jorge, nothing in the console logs. My General options are identical to Jorge's, except that "Show Growl icon in the menu bar" is selected.

Growl 1.2.2, OS X 10.7.1.

Same here.  If I choose Restart Growl, my notifications come back.  There's nothing in Console except for when I restart Growl:

8/30/11 2:45:56.654 PM GrowlHelperApp: WARNING: Could not register connection for GrowlApplicationBridgePathway
8/30/11 2:45:56.727 PM GrowlHelperApp: WARNING: could not register GrowlNotificationCenter for interprocess access

You didn't say if you have uninstalled and reinstalled Growl, which seems to be working for everyone else.

If by "everyone else" you mean one out the four people who reported the problem in this topic... :-)

However, I can confirm that uninstalling and reinstalling Growl did not solve the problem. I see no Console messages for Growl when I expect a notification, but I see the same messages when restarting Growl.

That's because those messages are only emitted when Growl starts, not when it receives a notification.

Check in the Activity Monitor. Is GrowlHelperApp running? (Use the search field; don't try to look for it yourself.)

So I posted a msg and I think it went to the wrong place.

Anyway, I have a similar problem. I installed growl on a brand new mac
running Lion and I noticed that I havent seen a single notification
for about a week (I'm able to see theme previews).

I decided to uninstall and reinstall with no success. Growl has yet to
display a single notification, I've tried several extensions ie.
growlsafari, mail, burn, hardware, and vlc to name a few.

If someone can help solve this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and the program says its running and showed up in the activity
monitor as well. I have since uninstalled it again entirely.

Thanks.

Growl 1.3 is our lion only version. We're expecting to have it submitted to the app store before the end of the month.

1.2.2 seems to work for me on 10.7. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to work for some people, but not for everyone as you have seen.

Is there anything showing up in the console log?

Forgive my delay in responding; it's taken this long for Growl to exhibit the same behavior.

Yes, Growl Helper App is still running. Restarting Growl caused another such process to be spawned, however. If it's any help to you, I've sampled the other process and can post it here or forward elsewhere.

Honestly I don't know what else to do here. We know 1.2.2 is broken in a lot of aspects for 10.7, and 1.3 will correct a lot of the problems that people are running into. When people on irc ask, we tell them to try that since it seemed to work for most people, and they say it works. However, that may not be very strong evidence if it takes this long to reproduce.

At this point my recommendation is going to be to wait for 1.3 to show up in the app store, and then to use 1.3 and remove 1.2.2.

Gotcha. Well, I'll just wait for 1.3. Looking forward to the History
option.
