Dear All,

If you thought it was worrying that the govt. has set up target of 200 GW capacity addition by 2022 (100 GW each for 12th and 13th five year plans), then brace for this.

A new report shows that 200 GW of thermal power projects have already been granted environmental clearance and an additional 500 GW is in various stages of getting approval. In total over 700 GW of thermal power capacity, largely coal-powered, is in the pipeline.

This is extremely disturbing. Not just from the perspective of pollution and resource depletion as outlined in the report but more so from climate change perspective. Unfortunately, the report dismisses the climate damage that will result from this capacity expansion with a single sentence in a footnote stating that that "development imperative is the first concern" for India.

While that could be a topic of another discussion, I don't want to take away, from the authors, the credit for highlighting this important issue of unconstrained expansion of thermal power plant capacity in India. Clearly, the environmental clearance mechanism, that does not take into account GHG emissions, is completely broken.

The report has been authored by Shripad Dharmadhikary -- an environmental activist associated with the erstwhile Narmada Bachao Andolan who has done both grassroots work and published big picture analyses on large dams and energy issues -- in collaboration with Shantanu Dixit of Prayas Energy Group. More details can be found in the presentation and report published by Prayas available here

An event has been organised in Delhi on coming Wednesday (28th Sep) to present and discuss findings of the report. Details of the event can be found here.

Thanks,
Manu

dear all,
thanks for sharing such a useful but alarming information. As the the plans, coal based thermal power capacity will continue to rise till 2032 and then rate of rise in capacity will start declining.  However, since 12th five year plant, most of the coal based capactiy addition in India will be based on supercritical efficiency which are more efficient with lesser emissions.
thanks once agains,
