FOR TONIGHT — has only ONE MORE night (Saturday at 7:30) It’s a unique collaboration between MSU Federal Credit Union Institute for Arts & Creativity at Wharton Center and MSU’s Department of Theatre, giving an elite group of students rom high school through grad school the chance to work with Broadway professionals, Adam Theodore Barry and Hannah Elless. Both were excellent, and were well matched by their costars MSU students Lukas Jacob and Hannah Martin.

This year’s immersive three week program helped further develop this new musical by Shenelle and Spencer Williams with book by Whitney Rhodes. The indie-rock anthem-upon-anthem seemed to turn the volume/energy up to “eleven” from the start and pretty much keep it there throughout act one. So much was music and so little dialogue, it was hard to follow at first, but the story did emerge through marvelously imaginative “black box” staging (direction and choreography by visiting professional Joe Barros.) The program did not state a “setting” but it seemed to be 19th century England dealing with epic themes of family, loyalty, prejudice and acceptance. It is a very high energy, well-staged saga that was obviously a wonderful experience for all the talented ensemble members, and brought the audience to its feet.

11/6 - 15 - Lansing Community College Theatre Program presents The Colleen Bawn
By Dion Boucicault, directed by Andy Callis

2 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015

Dart Auditorium  500 Capitol Avenue, Lansing 48933

The course of true love is anything but smooth as friends and family stop at nothing to make sure the "right" match is made. Set in 19th C Ireland, this magical melodrama is full of suspense and romance, humor and tragedy, music and dance, and surprisingly relevant social commentary with a mosaic of unforgettably Irish characters.

"The Colleen Bawn is a play with a lot of heart," said director Andy Callis. "In a sense the heart is the protagonist and heartlessness the antagonist. Various characters scheme against, spy on, and threaten others who happen to stand in the way of their twisted sense of status. This heartlessness is opposed to a specifically Irish heartbeat - a heartbeat exemplified by wonderful music, the Irish language, good humor, romance, and yes, whiskey."

The cast of LCC students includes Sarah Wilke as Eily O'Connor, the Colleen Bawn, and the secret love of Hardress Cregan (Zach Riley); Teri Brown as Mrs. Cregan, Hardress' selfish upper-class mother; Boris Nikolovski as Myles, a trickster and moonshiner with a good heart; Jesse Frawley as Father Tom, a problem solver who likes his whiskey and tobacco; Connor Kelly as Kyrle Daly, a young man in love; Hannah Feuka as Anne Chute, a young woman in love; Dustin Dikes as Mr. Corrigan, a somewhat villainous, social climbing attorney; Ian Whipp as Danny Mann, the sniveling hunchbacked servant totally devoted to the point of villainy to his master, Hardress; Kelley McNabb as Sheelah, Danny's loving mother - a bit peevish bit salt-of-the-earth; and company members Drew Birchmeier, Lae'la Ivey Brown, Ben Guenther, Richard Kopitsch, Nick Lemmer, Ndegwa McCloud, and Anna Raymo.

Live music will be performed throughout, featuring Jeff Boerger and Bob Borcherding.

The play is sponsored in part by ProAssurance.
