Drones, planes, too close for comfort in Canadian skies.

Hello everyone,

After learning just how relaxed Canadian regulations are regarding kite/balloon heights (just dont fly into cloud or in a way that *you think* endangers aircraft basically), and after some recent close encounters with sea planes, I am really interested in Canadian regulations and best practices for flying objects in the sky.

This segment of The Current (22 mins) is good food for thought regarding regular people flying things in the same sky that manned aircraft uses. The last speaker talks about the potential of using transponders with drones that would make them more obvious to other aircraft, which I think is interesting and maybe useful for kites and balloons.

How easy would lightweight transponders be to DIY? Is that even practical when you could just call up air traffic control and tell them where you are?

Do any of you more experienced people have any reflections on any of this?

Thanks!

Hi Melissa,
Mappers (especially those who map near airports) sometimes call in for a "notice to airmen." Since sea planes fly from all over near you, it might be a good idea to call up local air traffic. Another thing you could do on your own is tie pieces of mylar to your string as you let it out. Shiny things in the sky are red flags for flyers!
