Hello People who I hope can help me or at least tell me if my project is impossible.
I am working on preparing the inside map for the Grassroots Mapping Forum (Public Lab 5 year anniversary woo!), but I'm a graphic designer not a GIS specialist.
The inside map will be of BL1, one of the sites in Barataria Bay that was mapped last year.
To make the map more useful to viewers, I need some instructions or advice on how to do the following: (see the attached ROUGH jpg for a mock up of what I want to do).
1. I want to use a US GS underlay underneath the Public Lab map (and have it actually lined up so a pro-mapper doesn't get offended. I just screen shot a slide of Google maps)
2. Make sure my scale is accurate (I eyeballed this)
3. feature three tiny zoom outs to help people get a sense of where the BL1 is in relation to the Gulf ( I just screen shot some maps for the mock up attached, my first zoom out from google is too pale to really be readable...it'd be nice if the zoom outs were actually all clear with better contrast)
And I want to make sure I'm using all imagery that's okay to print in regards to ownership, etc.
I am using Adobe InDesign CS6 to do these layouts. I'm not even sure this is possible for me to do these things using InDesign, but if the layers were at least 'eye ball' lined up instead of perfectly lined up that would be great.
Let me know if this is out of my league (I do not have a background in GIS) and I should abandon this cause or if you can help me out or give me some pointers.
The other option is to just feature the map with no scale, and no underlays for reference (which I think really doesn't help viewers understand where they're at and waht they're looking at).
